Knoxville Media Hard Times

Word got out earlier this week
that the only major newspaper
left in Knoxville is again
cutting their staff.
Just a few weeks ago
the Knoxville News Sentinel
closed their Maryville paper (Blount Today)
and now the ax has swung again.
Reports say over thirty
staffers at the "KNS are gone.

Personally, I have so known
what it is like to be fired from several
"media" jobs and although
it hurt there was always
something else to do. Today, the
complexion of the job market
is totally changed.
Since 2008 the country
has been in a nose dive
and unless things in
D.C. change in the next election
finding work will be out of the question.

That said, the constant slashing of
veteran staff at the KNS has impacted
their news product greatly and
this last round of cuts will continue the slide.
But again, what about those
who were told to get out?
Yep it is Christmas and yep
there apparently was little
to no regard given to their
family situations or even
the season we are in.

When Profits are not where they should be,
the first to go under the bus are PEOPLE,
nothing new there, been going on for years.
KNS will suffer from this move as they suffered
from the others and the readers
will continue to drift away until
our area is left with nothing
but hack bloggers (I KNOW ONE OF THOSE) and
local TV as our only news source.

If you are asking your self could it be worse..
the answer is HELL YES!

WIVK is on the cusp of a major feces storm brought on by
a new set of owners hell
bent to squeeze every dime of profit
to the extent it turns into a dollar.
With zero regard to
what has made WIVK
what it is (number one for more years than
most can count)
these carpet bagging rectum pits
are about to
first cut the legs
out from under said
Frog and then slice just enough
of the heart to where
it will still beat and not go toes up.

Friends this is not going to be a good Christmas for
many people who
you have read or listened to over the years.
If you really want to make
the hairs on the
back of your neck dance,
look at it this way..
what is going on here
at home is being repeated
across the country daily.

Jim Dykes Passes

East Tennessee lost a print media icon this week. Jim Dykes wrote for the long dead Knoxville Journal, published a series of books, was an unofficial ambassador to the 1982 World’s Fair and the secret ruler of Rockford, Tennessee. Because he was mostly a print guy and because he worked for a newspaper that was much better than its competition he wasn’t front page news, but those who knew Dykes would say he would have been just fine with that.

Personally I only had three contacts with him; the first was in 82 at the World’s Fair where I found him lounging around early one morning in the pressroom. I was working for a radio station that had a remote studio down the hall from the press area and on a news break I walked out to see if any of the foreign press had come in. Dykes was on a couch, draped out like a dead man with his dirty boots resting on one of the pillows. It was my first physical encounter with the guy and I was taken by how long he was, had to be well over six feet, and how big a foot he had. Looking at him and hearing him snore with such conviction reminded me of the old adage about letting sleeping dogs rest and I did. Two hours later when my show was over Dykes was awake, enjoying a free beer, a Little Debbie snack and working the door to the press room like a Wal-Mart Greeter. As I walked by him, headed to the hall I complimented him on his derby.

Encounter number two was in Gatlinburg. We (CP and I) were working a big Christmas party for a very large oil company. After we told our jokes, helped give out gifts and turned the evening over to the DJ we moved to the bar for a few bracers to get us back to Knoxville. The room quickly filled with inebriated dancers trying to do “The Bump” and various free form interpretations when a side door opened. Due to the fact that one full wall of the hall was glass, allowing those walking by to see the festivities, Jim Dykes and his bride Peg spotted the private gathering as they strolled past. Without hesitation Dykes and said bride entered the far end of the hall, embraced and executed a very good waltz right through the gyrating throng. Without missing a beat, Dykes managed to open another door and continue waltzing right out of the room and into the hall toward the lobby. CP and I both gave the couple 10s for style, grace and balls.

The third and final encounter with Dykes came in the mail, as in the real mail that you walk across the yard to retrieve. I had been fired from something, can’t remember if it was a newspaper job or radio, but whatever it was he had found out about it. On the side flap of a Pall Mall carton in real ink (not the ballpoint pin crap but the real deal) he said he saw I now have some free time and suggested I come visit him at his estate (Condorhurst) in Rockford. I had moved to Rockford in 1978 and to the founders like Dykes I was more or less an outsider. Getting such an invite from a guy I had admired, read and in a left handed way stalked over the years made the dark situation I was in fade away. Unfortunately I did not get to visit him, meant to do it, and thought about it but a combination of shyness and a touch of inferiority kept me from making the drive over. I so wish I had now that he is gone.

I gave this mat to the word famous BOOMSDAY MARY, the Promotion Director at the old WMYU who did BOOMSDAY every year. She was one of the good ones at that strange station and tipped me off weeks in advance of my pending firing! Gave me time to get my lawyer in the loop, clean out all my joke files and have several new keys made to the front door. No I never went back in the building but I did give them out to folks living under a bridge with directions on where they could sleep inside and find free coffee. BoomsDay Mary reportedly is living in Floria now and BooMSDay has been taken over by the city of Knoxville.

A TV spot pushing a show in Murvel. Sammy is the best Barny living and
David (director) has been in more movies than I can count. Lots of fun doing
it.
This had to be at least 8 years ago or more. CP and Walker guesting on
a show that Eddy Beacon was doing. The station was 1180 AM and although it was 10K
I never could hear it outside of their parking lot. Again, can't remember the exact show but I do remember both of us being so so SLIM and FIT back then!

HAPPY B DAY to 63 years of excitment

In total celebration of "Self" (its a radio thing) I
realize that 40+ out of my 63 years
have been spent in radio either on the air or bitching
about it!

The "Book" and trust me most older radio folks
are always going to write one, will cover
not just my career (stilted as it was) but
the total fun that was had by those of us who
never took the industry seriously but rather
used it to party, make a little money,
five finger discount countless records, CDs,
T shirts, dinner coupons, gas trades (I remember
drawing partial pay in total trade because
the stations let their sales managers do it and
they told me none of the suits were even remotely
concerned with that pesky income tax question) and
countless bar and hotel room tabs.

It was so much fun, even getting canned! No really,
getting fired followed a pattern of being the first out
when the engines were in flames and the pilot had already
hit the silk. Looking back, I can't remember a station
that told me to pack up my office, that is
even remotely successful today. Naturally I would LOVE
to believe rolling my head on a Thursday (to let staff know
you really hate someone be sure to fire them midweek)
was the reason those who canned me either ended up selling
advertisements for the Yellow Pages or leaning against a used
GM product on a hot Saturday doing the math on how many
sleds they had to sell to make the payment on the boat.
Truth was often the small
cadre of suites that asked
to see me when I got off the air, were
always gone within the year. Again, NOT because they
ran me off but simply because their current radio adventure
was collapsing around them months before they were forced to
pay off my contract and demand my key.

I know it sounds bitter, but trust me I
never was and never will be. I really had fun
and what they didn't know
was I would have paid them to have played in
their sand boxes. As for little things like
being able to afford food and brown whiskey
after being told I was no longer needed,
I was raised by a man who taught me never to
live above my means. That, coupled with a
great wife who was on tenure, made it easy to
either find another job or not. In fact it was
so easy to pick where and even if I wanted
to work that I was privileged to always stay
within 30 miles of where I was born! In those days
that was unheard of, most radio types kept
their box of jokes in the trunk of their
used car and the trailer hitch polished.
Best shut up or I will give away the "Book"
and the tens of (unfortunately my family has
passed or there would have been twenties) buyers
will have no reason to fork over the three bucks
and download it to their Kendle. Best just end by saying
happy birthday to my favorite person and
send out great karma to all those still
out their "chirping" away. Hang in there
and if things get tight remember you
can always bore folks with a blog!

Hamilton is still loved?

Yesterday local sports radio talk show hosts, along with the ink kids were introduced to Gonzo.Gonzo's real name is Cuonzo Martin but because
some of us who only speak East Tennessee have trouble with learning the
proper pronunciation of new names we often just go with what is close
and familure as in Cuonzo sounds like Gonzo. That said, today
Martin is becoming the read deal, the next big thing, and
the BB Moses that shall lead us to the promised land of at
least the Elite Eight and maybe through the golden gates of the
Final Four.

As for the man who did the actually hiring
of Martin, the jury is SO still out. Get this, the time chosen to
shine the Big Orange spotlight on Martin was less than 4 hours
before the Lady Vols played their last game of the season in
the NCAA! Naturally, Hammertime (the current AD at UT)
was questioned on his timing and naturally he skated beautifully,
although this is the same guy that said Pearl was
toast the day BEFORE the men's first and last appearance in
this years NCAA.

That said, some think Hammy is still walking on a solid
foundation of quicksand and his job security is right
up there with Kadafi.

This morning the realization that Bruce is really gone and
the cold gray truth of Hammertime giving Gonzo 5 years of contractual
security and a pay raise of a tad over a million over what
he was pocketing at his now former job is starting to set in.
That hard core pocket of "IF THEY ARE PLAYING I AM GOING" UT fans is
starting to find sparks of genius in Hammy's (I so wish the East Tennessee
sports writers would pick ONE derogatory nick name for Hamilton and
stick to it) hire.

As for Hammy/Hammertime..only one local sports radio talk
show is left sucking up to him. Could be their deep fear
of offending the Large Orange AD department, their honest to
Budda feeling that fans love anything Orange including the AD
or they just might be a tad too lazy to see the big picture.
No matter what their motive, at least in a world of
dot connectors and fans who pay hard cash to UT for
the right to BUY a ticket they are about the only
dog left in the ring that thinks the AD is a positive
force for both the fan base and the University. Their
blind love for the AD reminds me of the old adage
concerning the difference in democrats and republicans.
All dogs are born democrat, then when they open their eyes
they become republican. Love dem old adages!

Tomorrow I get my car back, the one with satellite radio,
and I can leave the local terrestrial world. If there was
ever a time to revisit "local" sports talk radio these last few days
have been it.

When I found out James A. Dick
passed last night I instantly remembered
the first time I met the man.

It was in the 70s and I was afternoon
news anchor at WKGN. In those days both
WKGN and radio news in-general were highly
respected. The adage was if something made an
earth shaking boom, the radio instantly told you
where, that night the TV news had a picture of the
hole and the next day the newspaper had the name of the owner of the
still (today it would most likely be a meth lab)that
got everyones attention the day before.

In a nutshell, radio news was a big deal.

Norman Majors was Mr. Dick's News Director at
WIVK and we had gotten to know each other
by covering some of the same stories. Norman was and
still is a great guy who could get facts out of
anyone by just talking to them over the phone for a few
minutes, a trait vital to radio news folks in those days.
More importantly he had my trust. So when he called to
tell me he was leaving IVK and suggested I would make
a good News Director for James A. Dick I believed him.

Norman set up the interview at the station on the hill
on Kingston Pike, told me I would like Mr. Dick and
added that those who worked for the man just about never
left him.

The meeting was easy and I thought I did fine. One point
Mr. Dick kept asking my opinion on was the idea of putting
someone in a helicopter to report on traffic. I told him
that traffic was a big part of what we did at WKGN and
there was no need at all for a "flying" reporter because
our news department was required to monitor all the police scanners
and the instant a wreck came over in drive time we had the
power to break into programming and report it. When we were
finished talking I asked him if he needed a tape of me
and he said he had been listening for a very long time and
enjoyed my delivery and voice. Yep, walked out of WIVK
with the job in hand..or so I thought.

Turned out Mr. Dick had
already bought into the idea of
a flying reporter
and although the man dearly loved the idea
of saving money,
my idea was not going to fly.
Up side was a
few months later a part time guy
at WKGN told me he was going
to send a tape over to WETE
because their afternoon DJ (Mike Beach)
was leaving to come to WKGN.

Because I so wanted to get back into
jocking and also because I flat learned
the art of throat cutting
at the first station I worked for,
I hand delivered my tape to the Program Director
at WETE.
Don Patrick was both the PD and a very talented news guy,
He liked my sound and hired me
without listening to the tape. Less
than two years later, WETE was sold to
Basic Media out of Asheville and Curtis Parham (the WETE morning DJ)
suggested they keep both himself and me and do a team show in the morning.

That worked out rather well!

As for Mr. James A. Dick, his station did
better than great and the only ratings problem
they had was with those two new guys on WRJZ
(CP and Walker) in the morning.

The next time I met with James A. was when WRJZ was sold and everyone
was trying to find a new job.
Word was WRJZ was going country and the worst manager any of us had ever
experienced was going to remain at the station to run it.

My thought was CP and Walker could still work on AM if we could find
a place to land.
Mr. Dick thought that putting us on his AM along with
a format similar to the one we did at RJZ just might be the answer to
reviving the AM station.
I will never forget being in his office after the deal was cut
and someone knocking at his door
with a big bottle of champaign.
The card said it was from Rick Kirk a friend and a Jock at the now sinking
WRJZ. Mr. Dick read the card and
broke out in a giant laugh as he passed it around.
Rick's card said..
"I would so much rather work for a Dick than a Prick,
can we
talk about it?" Rick Kirk.

Dick Broadcasting founder James A. Dick has died
The group he founded with WIVK, Knoxville in 1953 had grown by 2000 to include clusters in Nashville (WGFX, WKDF), Birmingham (WAPI, WJOX, WRAX, WYSF, WZRR) and Greensboro/Winston-Salem. WIVK's Knoxville sisters at the time were WNOX-AM/FM, WOKI-FM and WXVO. The family sold all their stations except the two FMs in the North Carolina Triad: classic rock "Rock 92" WKRR (92.3) and CHR WKZL (107.5). James A. Dick died today (Sunday, Feb. 6) following what WIVK's Dave Foulk calls a lengthy illness. Foulk says, "James Dick not only helped launch the careers of several broadcasting legends, he was a community leader, founder of charities and a tireless supporter of several community endeavors in Knoxville." His former station WIVK, now at 107.7 and owned by Citadel, remains #1 in the age 12+ rankings for the market.

In December, 1952, the FCC granted James A. Dick a license to build a daytime only, 1000-watt AM radio station, and Dick Broadcasting was born. On March 20, 1953 WIVK-AM-860 signed on the air with a mixture of country (with the legendary “Cas Walker Live Country Music Show”), jazz, and gospel music, and such future stars as the Everly Brothers and Dolly Parton.

As the 50’s neared an end, radio was undergoing a massive change. Programming became more “formatted.” WIVK continued to air a broad range of music until 1961, when a strictly “Top 40” format was adopted. It was during these days that a young DJ named Bobby Denton started his career at WIVK.

In 1964, it was decided that Top 40 would be dropped in favor of country music, which seemed to have a much broader appeal throughout East Tennessee. The next year, Dick Broadcasting was granted a license to build an FM radio station. In December 1965, WIVK-FM signed on the air at 107.7 and an application was made to upgrade the signal of WIVK-AM. In November, 1966, WIVK-AM boosted its power from 1000 to 50,000 watts and moved to 850 on the dial. WIVK-AM became known as the “Jolly Green Giant.” The on-air lineup on WIVK at this time included Kenny Dearstone, Norman Majors, Claude Tomlinson, Bobby Denton (now our VP of Community Relations), Ed Brantley, Mike Hanes, and Terry Womack.

Steve Crabtree VP News & Operations at WVLT,
better known as (Crabs) announced his exit
from the station last week.

On his face book page
Steve clarified some of the
facts about his departure.

While head of the news at 8 the station
left the lowly number three (last in the local TV news)
ranking slot by kicking the blue heck out of former number two rival, WATE.

Oh speaking of 6, after the coldest and
wettest (snow) December on record in
East TN WATE felt it time to fire
three quarters of their Weather
Department last week. Smooth move ex-lax!

MSNBC reportedly had to say CYAMOFO to the
only hate monger with ratings on their
small but failing cable news outlet.
Keith (Bathtub Boy)Olbermann didn't even tell his staff
he was leaving...and you are shocked?..until
he waved good-by last Friday on the air. If you
really WANT to know more about him cleaning
out his desk and packing his box check out The National Ledger.

Local radio is about the same.

Local TV is about the same (except for 8 and 6)

Local social media (don't you just love that stuff)
is about the same.

We shall try to report in

These are trying economic times and Citadel Corporate made the difficult decision to eliminate the General Manager's position in the Knoxville market. This has been done in several other Citadel markets for cost cutting reasons. The position will not be refilled.

IF this can happen at the number one station in the market it can happen anywhere.
Since we (CP and Walker) left radio I have had dipped back into the fringe of the industry two POINT 1 times and I can tell you each experience caused me to miss the
"old" days. My personal (and this is only substantiated on personal experiences) opinion is only crooks, fools and those who just don't have a clue are either running the industry or trying to get into it. Granted today radio sales are kinda like a battlefield where both sides lost and only the wreckage and dead remain. Still anyway you cut it Corporate American is running most big stations now and when sales start to take that final swirl down the bowl people are always the next to go. We all know it, if you are in the industry you live with it daily but Brothers and Sisters that still does not make it easier when a guy who just captained the biggest and most successful radio ship in the nation gets tossed overboard.

So next time a radio rep. calls or drops in to see you, give them a listen and see if tossing a log on their fire can rekindle yours.

FLASH the local paper in Knoxville FINALLY found
out about the GORDOBLOWUP! They are so under
staffed so they do get a pass in missing this
thing. New count of those viewing is over half a mill
and climbing! Yep more than watch MSNBC in a month.

After a few months in Walland the
MEDIA REPORT was urged to come out of
hibernation and comment on the latest
WVLT Channel 8 All VOL Television on air faux pas.

First if you have yet to see
it a big congrats goes out to

sending the feed into u tube and a bigger thank you
goes to all of those 420,750 people
who have seen it.

LAND O GOSHEN 420,750 VIEWS? Heavens to Hanna that is
like...well..a doo doo load of interested folks taking
time to watch GORDO!! Considering the GORDOBLOWUP
covered one minute and 12 seconds...according to our
accounting department that comes to ... can this be right??
7012 HOURS (we dropped the 12 seconds cause we flunked fractions
back at Sam Houston Elementary) dang!

Taking the side of said reporter/anchor/All VOL WVLT Channel 8 Television
guy we have to ask everyone out their in cyber land..have you not also
dropped the cell phone in the porta-pottie, let fly a few air burners in church or
at the very least made a raving fool out of yourself at least ONE time in your life?

did send The Media Report blatant bribes
that included a half a ham and

WATE OWNERS IN DUMPER

Young is broke as in WAY broke and in bankruptcy as of last winter. Today it has been announced one of their
better stations is about to hit the auction Block.

Locally WATE use to be THE number TWO station
for local news until WVLT pushed them into the
third and lowest position.
The leading local news TV station, WBIR also
has also been feeling the economical
crunch. Old favorite shows have been
told to grab their stuff and
report to the unemployment line.

Times for all media included the "NEW" media are
sucking like a Dyson and there really is little to
no relief in sight. Some radio stations are reporting
a small up tick in sales but nothing that would
signify a turn around.

As our D.C. reporter, Walter Ridings Cronkite points out,
the odd ball group of thieves and tree hugging
socialists running the nation have little incentive
or desire to get out of the way and let the ship of state
cruise into calm waters.

The small skeleton staff at the MR wishes all
those at WATE and Young the best and hates to see
anyone on the street in these horrid times. Good luck
and remember your vote is so needed if we are going to
get these "people" in D.C. out of our lives and our pocket
books!

After sitting by the SEE ROCK CITY
Mail Box for weeks now, the staff
and management of the Media Report
is about resigned to the fact that
Hussein Obama's check to us is not coming.
With a heavy heart and a sad
hand we opened our cyber mail and
found some nasty words, obviously
sent by readers of knoxviews.com or
those who enjoy the company of
those types.

Before we reply,
here are just a few things in the
news.

North Korea convicted two American journalists and sentenced them Monday to 12 years of hard labor for crossing into its territory, intensifying the reclusive nation's confrontation with the United States.

The Obama administration said it would pursue "all possible channels" to win the release of Laura Ling and Euna Lee, reporters for former Vice President Al Gore's San Francisco-based Current TV media venture, a subsidiarity of the former VP Al Gore
Enterprises.

The good news is Al Gore announced late last week he
would personally fly to North Korea and try to secure the
release of the women. The bad news is he said he would
return to the USA with or without them.

Speaking of Al Gore, his global warming MYTH has taken yet another hit in the shorts! If it seemed cold to you in Green Bay on Saturday, it was. The high temperature for the day, reached at 9:50 a.m., was 52. That set a record for the lowest high temperature for June 6, according to the National Weather Service office in Ashwaubenon.

The old mark was 53, set in 1943.

In Bismarck, N.D. snow has fallen in Dickinson in June, the FIRST TIME in nearly 60 years the city has seen snow past May.
It was so cold in Dickinson, their oldest resident, Lamar Overcoat was arrested for just trying to warm his hand!

Al Gore responded saying the new watch word is
CLIMATE CHANGE...you know now that it is
getting COOLER rather than hotter and all!

Look this guy is old, a joke to all
who used to hear him on the radio and more
than that a pathetic Republican. The party
that only knows hate and hating. We
banned him from knoxviews and so did
the administrators of the WATE site.
As for his firing at the paper, it
was justified not only for his right
leanings but for his lack of talent and
inability to even spell correctly.
He was a nightmare to edit and
not one story he ever turned in was
published as he wrote it, to avoid
embarrassment of the paper. Also
when he was fired not one single e mail
or call came in asking where he was.
Today he is broke, has no friends and
is laughed at when he goes out in
public. His party is nonexistent and
his thoughts on this blog are both
that of a bigot and a racists. As for
why we even respond the answer is simple,
blogs like this are monitored by us and
if they go further over the line
we can and will get them pulled.

radio personality was at Hillcrest West, Highland West will be handling the arrangements and the receiving of friends is Monday (June 8th) from 6-8.

POA was WNOX mornings and actually turned the station around. The morning ratings fight between WKGN and WNOX was legendary until POA came to the Big 99.
The man only did news, but the way he did it and what he wrapped the facts of the story in made
the top of the hour a destination for listeners.

High-ranking House Democrats (DON'T MISS THEIR NAMES..LORD ONE IS A GUY NAMED...Edolphus) are urging the Treasury Department to prop up minority-owned broadcasters suffering from a lack of capital and lost advertising revenue amid the economic slump.

House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.) is leading an effort to convince Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner (A TOTAL DORKASSFOOL WHO HAS PROVEN TO THE NATION HE IS COMING UP WAY SHORT IN THE BRAINS DEPARTMENT) to take “decisive action” by extending credit to this sector of the broadcasting industry.

Clyburn and other senior members, including House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank (D-Mass.) (KILL ME NOW..THE BARNEY FRANK WHO NEVER MET A FANNY HE DIDN'T LOVE) and Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charles Rangel (HEY CHUCK PAY YOUR DANG TAXES OK?) (D-N.Y.), argue that minority-owned broadcasters are sound businesses, but that the recession could undermine the government’s efforts to diversify the airwaves. (DID THEY SAY THE GOVERNMENT'S EFFORTS? I THOUGHT WE WERE THE GOVERNMENT AND IF WE ARE WE COULD GIVE A RAT'S SOUTHBOUND IF THESE STATIONS GO BELLY UP TOMORROW!)

A number of members from the Congressional Black Caucus signed the letter, too. (WOW I AM SO SHOCKED!..NOT!)

“While many jobs are at stake, a more important principle — the government’s fundamental interest in promoting a diversity of voices, including service to underserved communities — is severely threatened,” (HECK, I THOUGHT THE GOVERNMENT WAS HERE FOR NATIONAL DEFENSE..NEVER KNEW IT WAS TO PROMOTE DIVERSITY? LIVE AND LEARN!) the members write in a draft of a letter that was scheduled to be sent Tuesday.

The letter comes as some of the biggest recipients of government bailout money, including JPMorgan Chase & Co., Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, jockey to repay government bailout money. As banks seek a way out from the government’s restrictions, other industries struggle and seek government support. Some firms seeking to repay the government argue that the government’s restrictions have burdened their businesses.

The congressmen suggest the Treasury Department could provide access to capital to minority-owned broadcasters, which they say represent less than 7 percent of full-power radio stations and a “negligible” ownership of television stations. (LORD YES THEY REPRESENT LESS THAN 7 BECAUSE FULL POWER RADIO STATIONS ARE ALL BUILT AROUND THE IDEA OF MAKING MONEY WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE SEVEN TALKED ABOUT ABOVE!)

“They are looking for continued access to capital to continue their otherwise fundamentally sound operations,” the members write. (HEY MEMBERS IF THEY ARE FUNDAMENTALLY SOUND THEN THEY DO NOT NEED O U R TAX DANG DOLLARS!)

The letter suggests Treasury could set up a credit facility specific to the industry, similar to the government’s efforts to support auto suppliers, or possibly set up a program for bridge financing and government-backed loans until the economy improves. (OR HERE IS A BETTER IDEA OUR TREASURY SHOULD RUN FROM THIS FASTER THAN A MAN TRYING TO CARRY A FLAT SCREEN OUT OF SEARS IN A RIOT!)

“In addition to the credit crisis, also weighing heavily on minority broadcasters is a significant decline in advertising revenues, particularly the loss of automobile advertising,” the congressmen write. (HEY CONGRESSMEN, CAR ADVERTISING IS DOWN AT ALL STATIONS, IF YOU ARE REALLY GOING TO DO THIS SACK OF BULL FECES IDEA THEN LETS SEND SOME CHECKS TO ALL OF THEM!)

NEW YORK -- Young Broadcasting Inc., owner of 10 TV stations affiliated with the CBS and ABC networks, including two in Tennessee, said Friday it has filed for Chapter 11 protection in U.S. bankruptcy court in the Southern District of New York.

The New York-based company said it will continue to operate the stations without interruption.

"Our decision to restructure through a Chapter 11 filing will allow the company to bring its debt in line with current economic realities so that we can emerge a stronger and more financially secure company. It is important to note that we are restructuring our debt, not our operations," says Chairman Vincent Young in a written statement.

TV broadcasters in the U.S. are under pressure as the economic downturn sends advertising revenue spiraling downward. Credit rating agency Moody's Investors Service warned last week that broadcasters entered the recession with high levels of debt and already were struggling to retain audiences as more customers turn to portable gadgets and the Web for entertainment.

At the same time, broadcasters -- and some of their cable counterparts -- are facing tough times absent must-see television such as major political campaigns or the Olympics.

On Thursday, the country's fourth-largest cable operator Charter Communications Inc., said it expects to file for bankruptcy by April 1 and get relief from creditors.

The St. Louis-based company has never made a profit since it began trading publicly in 1999.

And last December, Chicago-based Tribune Co., which owns flagship newspapers such as the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, The (Baltimore) Sun, The Hartford Courant and other dailies, as well as 23 television stations and the Chicago Cubs baseball team, sought bankruptcy protection amid a $13 billion debt load and sinking ad revenues.

Young Broadcasting owns a national television representation firm, Adam Young Inc., and the following stations:

tells us that Bankruptcy tant always
a bad thing, for the OWNERS of the joint.
Shifty also said there are more chapters of

Shifty would have explained the ins and outs of

he said he would have to kick in the meter and

he mentioned something about talent contracts

Naturally Young Broadcasting (WATE's mother ship) announced late on a Friday to keep the flack to a minimum. STILL, when Zeek was on the heated porcelain throne Saturday morning
he found several mentions of it in the Wall Street Journal.

Unlike the fine release from WATE (see POSTER ONE ABOVE) the
big story talks about a station in Calf being Young Broadcasting's "Bridge Too Far" and kinda blames the
soon to be court appearance on it.

Finally we turned this over

Zeek was in line to audition
for the role of a pioneer, redneck,

being axed come this fall! After being a
background player for years Zeek took it personal
and did an "end around" run at the front desk to get

Back in olden times when the station was taken over
and the new suits reviewed the budget they
kinda thought stories about a toothless octogenarian
on a porch pushing a plunger and singing COME BUTTER COME..
were a bit over priced. Still, with the talent of Steve of the Deans behind the adventure they did a bit of financial
slicing around the edges and let the wonderment
of the good old days continue on BIR.

Zeek said the reason for the
dropping of the ax was money.
He also said he could see it, cause
when he first started as an "extra"
on the show his pay was a 5X7 photo
of him standing in front of the old
Cas Walker wall flanked by
a cut out of Cas, and John Rice Irwin.
Over the years the fame and glory were
bundled in a monetary contribution that
made Zeek always be first in line
when there was a cattle call!

So is the show really going to pick up
the mussel loader, a quart of two hundred
proof and take that one way walk out into the
woods? According to the power brokers the word
is no. The only change is those who make
the show will now be in the soon to be forming
Obama bread lines, while the shows that are
in the can continue to run.

Zeek is heart broken that the Heart Land
has lost its Heart on this the day before
VALENTINES.

Radio host Mario Solis Marich asked former President Bill Clinton if it was time for "some type of enforced media accountability.

The only MAJOR newspaper
in Knoxville (The Knoxville News Sentinel)
is owned by the light house guys and
one year ago their stock was selling for
$49.26.

Today you can grab it if you move really fast
for a Buck Fifty!

Like all newspaper chains
this one is also taking that twisting slide
down the porcelain bowl. Lots of ideas on saving
money are popping up from HQ and none of them
put much of a smile on the faces of the worker bees.

With the New York Times being rumored to
be less than 11 months away from turning off
the lights and calling it a night print
boys and girls all over the country are starting to quiver.

The local radio chains are also
wondering what is up with their
owners.

Journal Communications, Inc broadcasting segment consists of 37 radio stations and nine television stations in 12 states, as well as the operation of two additional television stations under local marketing agreements.WCYQ-FM, Q93.

Locally they own; WWST-FM, "Star 102.1,"
WKHT-FM Hot 104.5
and WKTI-AM Studio 1040.

Since Oct. of 2008 the stock has fallen from 5.50 to
1.62.

But hold on, their stock is actually
exciting when you hold it up to Citadel Broadcasting!

These are the fellows that made James A. Dick
so much richer than he already was and put a
smile on Bobby's face that time can't erase!

Yep they own, WIVK, NewsTalk, Sports Animal,and Whatever the name of that Oldies station is.

In 2004 Citadel Stock was being gobbled up at
$25.00 a share...according to the market today it is
at .16 cents a share.

and unless THE ONE can get the banks
to lend rather than hoard all those
dollars us TAX PAYERS are giving them,
people will continue to not BUY and by not
buying those who sell will continue to not
ADVERTISE!

in need of a 700+ credit rating to borrow

I would rather the paper go under than any of the three TV stations. At least they try to report some news without making it a political statement.

Who buys the most local TV advertising and are they still buying?

Sounds like WATE is in the most trouble of the three. I like Gene and I also like the woman on in the morning. Lori is someone we all grew up with and she does a great job.

Ed...Ya know if the paper
expired you have to believe
some ego with money would
print a replacement. Sure it
would be smaller and on line, but
again there would be SOMETHING out there.

What is a TV station like that worth in Knoxville and does that big house come in the deal?

Ed...The question is not would someone buy
the station or the company but more like
why? Right now it would take a very special
person to jump into any aspect of media.
Remember the reason the stock of any and all
of these places is dropping is evaporating
advertising dollars. Will those dollars come back?
If so how LONG before they do? Questions like
that make the folks with big dollars shy away
from buying most media right now.

I listen to HHH and his talk show is full of sponsors, so is Rush and Phil in the afternoon. Over on B 97 I never hear ads?

Ed...Sure there are some people buying but
not as many as last year and none are buying
as much. Everyone can keep drawing a check
as long as the parent company keeps sending them but
as you can see from the stock drops some of these
parent companies are in C.C.U. and starting to turn
blue very quickly.

By the way, on the TV thing, how come WATE's reporters continue to mispronounce Letalvis Cobbins' name? It's Letalvis, not Letavius.

ED...Jukebox radio is all over XM and
it is where more and more folks are going
when they just want their tunes. Key here is
those radio stations will never tell you
that school is closing due to the snow, what that giant
cloud of black smoke is over Kingston or
why those giant cracks are opening up in the yards
out in Halls. Keeping it local is the ONLY
way stations today can fight the real twenty five hits
in a row "pay" stations.

staff at THE MEDIA REPORT
stays home with a quart of
Jägermeister, their new
Michael Phelps Bong and
watches TV Land.

Days like this the
accounting department
often feels it is their duty to
turn out a post.

Could Knoxville become a ONE (local news)
TV Station market?

Here are their thoughts and
as always, no matter how ugly
or off the wall..YOUR thoughts are welcome!

To really understand more
about the situation the three
local TV stations (that offer news) are
in you kinda need to know something
about the companies that own them and
if they have the proverbial pot to
make water in?

Gannett Co., Inc Is the
parent company of WBIR TV.

One year ago Gannett Co was
finding buyers for their
stock at over thirty dollars a share.
Today GCI was trading
at a touch under five dollars.

Latest news on the Gannett stock is not good at all.

(Reuters) - "Moody's Investors Service on Monday cut its ratings on Gannett Co (GCI.N) to the cusp of junk territory and said it may cut them into junk, citing the company's ongoing and deepening revenue declines."

The upside is unlike most companies
Gannett has been steadily paying a nice
dividend since it went public many years ago.
The last they paid was over .40 a share.

The downside is...Gannett executives said last week the company's board would meet in February to evaluate its dividend.

WVLT is owned by Gray and
five years ago their stock was selling
for over 14 dollars a share. Today
try less than a half a dollar.

Locally WVLT has moved past WATE for the
number two ranking in the local news race and
WVLT is also the station for UT sports.
Can they beat WBIR in the local news
race? The answer is,can they afford
to invest the money to do it?

Rumor has it WVLT and WBIR
are sharing news video. For oldtimers the very thought of
competitors doing something like that makes eyes brows rise
and hackles dance. Still these are
not the old times these
are the SCARY times and
if the purpose is both
to save money and to continue to
push WATE further down the
local news ratings ladder
then there could be merit in the move.

Before you pass a second
collection basket at Prayer Meeting to
help the "From The Heart" staff
or those at WVLT, consider their former
competitor, WATE

For years Channel 6 was
always "this close" to making a
move on WBIR in the local
TV news race. NEXT BOOK
they were going to tie
and then it was just a matter of time
before they could raise
rates and raise the big
WE ARE NUMBER ONE
banner over Graystone.

Well that next book never
happened and today their parent company
Young Broadcasting is
in what Eddy referred to as being full
in the movie, CHRISTMAS VACATION!

Young Broadcasting was finding
buyers for their
stock in the beginning
of 2005 at TEN DOLLARS
a share!

By mid 2005 the stock
was under FIVE and it
finished out the 2007
year at less than THREE dollars.

Sound bad? Hey, those were the good years.

Today the
stock is between 1 and three CENTS a share.
It gets worse, MUCH worse....

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Young Broadcasting Inc. (NASDAQ:YBTVA) announced today that it received a notification from the NASDAQ Hearings Panel that the Company’s common stock will be delisted from The NASDAQ Stock Market since the Company failed to meet certain of the NASDAQ requirements for continued listing. Trading will be suspended effective at the open of business on Tuesday, January 27, 2009.

So what happens now?

Normally when a company gets in this shape
another company will gobble them up
at a bargain price.
The problem Young will
have is there just
isn't that many out there
gobbling small television chains,
fact is
there isn't that
many gobbling large television
chains.

If you still wanta do the love offering
best do it for WATE.

Bottom line is the bottom line is causing all of
the local radio and TV stations to slowly bleed out.
Some much slower than others but all are feeling it.
It is sad to think of what is happening to 401Ks, raises,
and even the ability to hire when needed. Could
Knoxville become a one or two TV news market?
Before you answer remember when you never dreamed it
would become a ONE newspaper market.

last night and said D.C. is
still excited about the
new leader of the free
world.

Our fashion editor Lacy Nightie
said the small explosion over
the new First Ladies dresses
is now no more than a slight
break of wind.

Apparently all of the famous
African American designers
were up in trees over the
two dresses because none of their
lines were considered?

All is well now after
word filtered down from the big house
that in the future all designs will be
considered, not just those made and worn

a fake fir coat, hat, gloves, shoes and
mask,a crisp five dollar bill
for an all access laminate I done found
myself in the crypt of the Capitol. Gentle
reader I was so close to Jimmy Carter I could
have bounced a quarter off his old lady's
Botox filled jaw! As they was preparing to head out to the platform the Carters and the Clintons were forced to occupy the same cramped space.

Jimmy Carter gave the Clintons the Buckhead Brush Off and went right over and warmly, kissed Barbara Bush dead
on the mouth WITH TONGUE. But as Carter passed fellow Democrats Bill and Hillary Clinton, the two men did not appear to acknowledge each others presence at all.

I did manage to hear
Jimmy say something about the least Bill could have
done when he was raking in all that Katrina money
would have been to have given a few hundred million
to the Billy Carter Memorial Library and Road House. On a
a personal note I have visited the BCMLRH and can tell you
the money is much needed. Despite being a Democrat Only
Joint the only beer they can afford to serve is BUSH.

Less than an hour before Barack Obama took the oath of office, I flashed my I HATE SARAH BADGE and got
into the ABC News booth.
Just as I walked in Charles Gibson (I called him
Chuck and he warmed right up) spotted former Vice President Al Gore
. Suddenly Chuck got this glazed look
in his eyes, and he started fantasized about how this could have been Gore's last day in office, not George W. Bush's.
No kidding, His eyes rolled further back in
his head and I thought he was going to pull
a Ted Kennedy and fall face first into
a salad plate! Chuck said..."Had he gotten a second term," "had he been elected president in the first place in the year 2000, and then gotten a second term -- he would be there as the outgoing President of the United States."

Well someone had to do something so I
slapped him so hard dem glasses flew right off
his nose,and I yelled "Charlie WAKE UP SARAH
IS OUTSIDE WITH AN AUGHT SIX AND SHE IS
LOOKING FOR YOU!" Like Lazarus Mr. Gibson rejoined
the living, pulled out his GLOCK and went all
Chuck Norris on me. I done slid out the side
door as one of his producers darted him from
across the table. CLOSE CALL!

After the gun thing with
Chuck, ABC security
noticed the wet ink on
my pass and things went south.
Lots of beatings, got water
boarded three times and
when I still wouldn't tell
them who I was working for they
threatened to show me naked pictures
of Harry Reed and Nancy Pelosi doing
the Dirty Deed!

Gentle reader there is much more
but my eyes are about shut and
the guard is going to take my
Blackberry on his next pass so I better

cut a fast deal with FOX that if
they would post bail I would

radio folk it be the day
one famous D.C.
radio kid done stepped in it
and slid all the way to
the front door and the parking lot!

Doug "The Greaseman" Tracht
was shocking when Howard was
still a gentile and Imus was
YOUNG! As most who were
good in those days his bumper hitch
had all the chrome rubbed off (no really
that thing he used to hook his trailer
to the car with) and radio stations were
scared to both hire him and even more scared
the competition WOULD hire him!

Lady Vols were flat beautiful players but when referencing

criticized their hair style and their
practices of courtship? Got him canned for six long
months..BUT it paled in comparison to what
The Greaseman did twenty years earlier.

In February 1999, while at WARW (now WTGB), Tracht made a comment about James Byrd, who was murdered in 1998 by being dragged behind a pickup truck by two white supremacists. The Greaseman had been playing a song by Lauryn Hill. Tracht then stated, as a reference to the quality of her music, "and they wonder why we drag them behind trucks." After the comment, he immediately stated that he "didn't mean nothing." But it didn't help ease the backlash. This incident proved catastrophic to his radio career, igniting a firestorm of protest from listeners of all races, including Donnie Simpson, who savaged Tracht on his morning show on sister station WPGC-FM. Not only was Tracht quickly fired from WARW, but also he lost his position as a Volunteer Deputy Sheriff in Falls Church, Virginia.

gone so was Echo Shoes along with nine
other big name stores in that mall.
Also, like Big Dog
it wasn't just in that location but it was
ALL of their locations...closed, gone, history
nothing more than a dream that was! Zeek did
report the Candy Kitchen was still thriving
and this months dipped caramel apples were
exceptionally good.

"I remember a few weeks after
I got to WETE from WKGN
our PD (Don Patrick) left.

Don was one of
those very FEW management
types who both had a clue
and could make you work harder by the fact
that you so respected him.
Anyway, he left and
Heaven Help Us the GM took over.
That guy (the GM) is dead now
so I won't say much
about him except that
whenever SALES takes
over programming things turn dark very fast.

One morning someone
spotted Allen in the
GMs office and the word got out that
he was talking to him about becoming PD.

Yep, doves were released, really ugly bookkeepers were
hugged and just
to make sure the thing
would happen the
all night guy went to the basement
to prepare the human sacrifice.

Sadly, I guess Allen figured out the real deal
...once SALES gets their
fingers into programming they never let go...
and he exited the building.

It would have been a
fun ride because WETE
had the power back then
and later when Basic Media
bought it and turned
it into WRJZ that power,
coupled with the late Bob Kagan
gave Knoxville a station
that jumped right in the
car with them and changed
all their dial settings to 620

Zeek is headed to the coronation on the 20th and has been working
like a motivated field hand to become a Democrat before

GREAT FUN Saturday evening at South Land Books!
Zeek stood in the RAIN with his
sign and around 5 PM he started
throwing himself in front of cars!
Worked like a champ, traffic stopped,
Life Star landed several times and
those caught in the jam came on in
to South Land Books for the in
store!

First guy in, sporting
a FAMOUS festive hat was
Maryville's most famous actor
David Dwyer. Get this, when
you read about David you will
say..OH YEA I HAVE SEEN THAT GUY

entrance was a harbinger (hell of
a good word, just found it in the back of
Reader's Digest) of things to come. Folks from
Washington State, Johnson City, Knoxville and yep

his band PISTOL CREEK CATCH OF THE DAY!
These guys are as eclectic as their music
and have a bigger following than Jim Jones!
Ed is always helping either with his band or

"It was good news-bad news for Citadel's venerable WIVK/Knoxville on Wednesday (Nov. 26). On one hand, fall phase one results showed the station off to a great start with a 19.5 12+ share. By the end of the work day, however, it also had a competitor, Journal's WCYQ, "Q93, Today's Continuous Country."

Q93 replaces the '80s format of WMYU. According to Chris Protzman, VP/GM of Journal/Knoxville, "We've listened to what Knoxville radio listeners have been asking for quite a while, and that was a radio station that would play their favorite country hits of today without constant interruptions."

The station officially launched Wednesday afternoon at 5 p.m. with a promise of playing 10,000 songs in a row and plans for "several major promotions in the coming weeks." WCYQ already has a Web site up and running at www.Q93Country.com."

MR Sports Director Joc Sniffer,

Lane Kiffin is the Vols’ next football coach. Even though UT athletic director Mike Hamilton denied the fact while the search was underway. Kiffin will become UT’s third coach since 1977.

Kiffin is former NFL’s Oakland Raiders coach. The Raiders fired Kiffin in September after compiling a 5-15 record in one-plus seasons. When he was hired by the Raiders in January 2007 at age 31 he became the youngest coach in the NFL’s modern history. His salary was $2 million per season.

Kiffin was an assistant at Fresno State from 1997-98 and Southern Cal from 2001-04 and the Trojans offensive coordinator from 2005-06.

Kiffin has been assembling a staff for quite some time:

* Monte Kiffin: Lane Kiffin’s father, Monte Kiffin is a highly respected defensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

* Ed Orgeron: a defensive line coach with the New Orleans Saints, Orgeron coached with Kiffin at Southern Cal and furthered his reputation as one of the best recruiters in the nation when he coached at Ole Miss.

* Bill Callahan: Callahan has been fired from two coaching positions, with the Raiders and Nebraska, but is still considered an accomplished offensive coordinator. He is currently an assistant offensive head coach for the New York Jets.

* Doug Marrone: Now the offensive line coach for the Saints. He also coached for the Vols in 2001.

* Joe Whitt Jr.: The defensive quality control coach for the Green Bay Packers, Whitt was known as a strong recruiter as quarterbacks coach and recruiting coordinator at Louisville.

* David Reaves: Lane Kiffin’s brother-in-law who is quarterbacks coach and recruiting coordinator at South Carolina.

* Chris Kiffin: Lane Kiffin’s brother who is a coaching intern at Nebraska.

radio show. Listening on his wireless
in the back of his single wide in the 4th and Gill
neighborhood he caught a fill in host that brought
a tear to his glass eye.

Long time radio hellion CARL WARNER
filled in for Lloyd last Friday and cut a
mighty path across the airwaves! Warner had
a young boy who is often elected by Knoxville
Democrats (OK he lost this last time but
even a blind cat could see that one coming) on
the show with him and when the smoke cleared
the kid had been cut deep and often!

Warner was so on his game this child just
gave up, took off his Radio Shack issue head
sets and stormed out of the studio! Hint to anyone who
is on a talk radio show and is coming up short in the
battle of wits, WALKING OUT WILL GET THAT BIG
L PLACED DEAD CENTER BETWEEN YOUR EYES!

Older folk may remember Carl from his days on WETE, AM 620 and
his famed talk show Yen and Yang! His counterpart has
passed on to that big transmitter in the sky, but Carl (at the alleged age
of 107) is still in there slinging the rocks! Zeek has started a one
bum letter writing campaign to get Carl and the Boy back for a rematch!

The 2003 staff HUMMER was in the shop yesterday getting
bigger tires, two new saddle gas tanks installed and having the pollution system cut out.
Zeek Ridings was forsed to use a rental car with nothing but an AM/FM
radio on board. Dialing up "over the air" radio for the first time in months he heard HHH talking with the dean of Knoxville radio news about his
weight loss operation. Zeek has been a Dave Foulk fan since before HHH was born and
really does wish him the best.

Good job WBIR NEWS.

It has been 44 years since Tennessee lost to both Vanderbilt and Kentucky in the same season. That was 1964 when Doug Dickey was in his first year as Vol head coach.
But here we are on the threshold of the final two games of 2008, and the Vols face the possibility, as unthinkable it is might be, of losing in the same year to Vanderbilt and Kentucky, both of which already are bowl-eligible (a minimum of six wins).
The 2008 Vol season is coming to an ugly end.
Athletics director Mike Hamilton has fired head coach Phil Fulmer, who has won 150 games since becoming Tennessee’s head coach in 1992. And the madness of trying to hire a new coach is under way.
Some on Tennessee’s secret “wish list” already have said “thanks, but no thanks.”
In a recent speech at a Maryville civic club, retired SEC commissioner and former Vanderbilt AD Roy Kramer, without naming Hamilton or Tennessee, commented that it is a lot easier to fire a coach than to identify and hire a new one.
Hamilton’s precipitous action, forcing Fulmer to resign or face being fired, could have set the stage for one of the shortest tenures as AD in Tennessee history. Hamilton, in short, could botch this one.
Hamilton hit the jackpot when he hired basketball coach Bruce Pearl a few years ago, but football is the engine that drives Vol athletics. The difference is stadium capacities. Neyland Stadium can seat 100,000 for football. Thompson-Boling Arena can accommodate only 22,000. Do the math. Football has to be successful at Tennessee to generate enough revenue to support the other sports, including women’s basketball, which has won eight national titles.
Hamilton has no coaching background and, until succeeding Dickey a few years ago, no experience as an AD. At Clemson and Wake Forest, he was a bean counter, a fund-raiser. He wouldn’t know the world’s greatest football coach if the man walked into his office, kicked off his shoes and put his smelly feet on Hamilton’s desk.
The deep-pocket donors and influential alumni who endorsed the elevation of Hamilton to succeed Dickey may well have endangered Tennessee’s athletics future.
Hamilton’s gross mishandling of money is a loud alarm bell. He’s run up an enormous debt to build new Vol athletics facilities and to enlarge and fancify existing ones.
By June 30, 2037, if no new projects are undertaken, the UT athletics department will owe approximately $106 million in debt, plus the principle. It is extravagance beyond all comprehension, and Hamilton is the guy with the rich tastes.
If Vol football falls on its face the rest of this decade, Vol athletics will take a hard financial hit, and Hamilton will be responsible. The virtual collapse of the football team in Fulmer’s final season has started Tennessee down that road to disaster.
The current SEC football standings tell a frightening story. Eight of the SEC’s 12 schools, including five in the SEC East, already have qualified for 2008 bowl games. Tennessee is the only one in the SEC East that has not, and the Vols have no chance because their record is 3-7 with only two games left. Auburn (5-6) and Arkansas (4-6) can still qualify.
Vanderbilt, Tennessee’s foe this Saturday, and Kentucky the following week, once were two certain “Ws” in Tennessee’s win column, but they can no longer be taken for granted.
This is a delicate moment in the history of Vol athletics, and there’s no quick-fix on the horizon.
Will the next head coach, whoever it is, be able to reverse Fulmer’s losing trend and begin to replenish the Vol coffers? It is problematic.

As we have seen in previous election cycles, the exit poll results do leak early and that ends up influencing the coverage of the race before even the first state polls close at 6:00 PM Eastern.

However, we want to remind the campaign that the media’s own post-election study of the exit polls in 2004 showed that the exit polls overstate the Democratic candidate’s support. Therefore, we would discourage a rush to judgment based on the exit polls and wait until there has been a representative sampling of actual tabulated results from a variety of counties and precincts in a state.

Here are the key points to keep in mind when the exit poll data starts being leaked:

1. Historically, exit polls have tended to overstate the Democratic vote.

2. The exit polls are likely to overstate the Obama vote because Obama voters are more likely to participate in the exit poll.

3. The exit polls have tended to skew most Democratic in years where there is high turnout and high vote interest like in 1992 and 2004.

4. It is not just the national exit poll that skews Democratic, but each of the state exit polls also suffers from the same Democratic leanings.

5. The results of the exit polls are also influenced by the demographics of the voters who conduct the exit polls.

After the 2004 election, the National Election Pool completed a study investigating why the exit polls that year showed John Kerry over performing 5.5 net points better than the actual results showed him to have done. Their conclusion was that the primary reason the exit polls was that Kerry voters and Democrats were more likely to participate in the exit polls.

“Our investigation of the differences between the exit poll estimates and the actual vote count point to one primary reason: in a number of precincts a higher than average Within Precinct Error most likely due to Kerry voters participating in the exit polls at a higher rate than Bush voters. There has been partisan overstatements in previous elections, more often overstating the Democrat, but occasionally overstating the Republican.

We believe that this will hold true this year. The recent Fox News survey showed that 46% of Obama voters said they were very likely to participate in the exit polls, while just 35% of McCain supporters are.

In fact, even the 2004 exit poll report noted that higher turnout nationally and higher levels of voter interest in both 1992 and 2004 correlated with greater Within Precinct Error.

The overstating of the Democratic vote did not only occur in the national exit polls, but also occurred in the state exit polls. The 2004 exit poll report cited that the Kerry vote was overstated by more than one standard error in 26 states, while the Bush vote was overstated in just four states. So we should also expect the individual state exit polls on Tuesday to be more Democratic as well.

So given that turnout is expected to be even higher than 2004 and that Democrats are more likely to participate in the exit polls, this means we should expect greater fluctuation and variation in the exit polls from the actual election results.

The 2004 exit poll report also showed that the greatest error in the exit poll came in precincts where the interviewer was younger. The completion rates were lower and the refusal rates and Within Precinct Error was higher when the interviewers were under the age of 35.[6] Complicating this is that nearly half the interviewers were under the age of 35, including 35% who were 18-24 and another 15% were 25-34.

Conclusions

Based on the previous exit poll results, we should expect once again that Tuesday’s exit poll data could overstate the Obama vote and under represent the McCain vote.

First, the entire
staff sighed with ACORN
to vote yesterday and headed
on down to the early voting
place in the old Evertts gym.

Taking the company HUMMER
at lunch they encountered a
two hour line. Returning at 5
in the afternoon the line was
running 3 hours. A fast look around
the parking lot showed many McCain
stickers on cars but due to the fact
that the staff signed up with ACORN
they were told if they did not vote
Obama they would not receive their
half pint of Old Kentucky Gentleman with
the five dollar bill glued to the back label.
Pressing matters at the office caused staff
to abort both voting attempts but they pledged
to return on the 4th and try one more time.

radio stations were local and not coming into our
ears from a floating platform way up in
space the canning process was instigated by
low ratings. Kinda like this thing at UT who
also can't win much anymore. Because the first
person to catch heat was the General Manger
he started the chain of blame. Yep, lets not fire ME
lets fire the PROGRAM DIRECTOR! The PD tells the GM
it is all the fault of the TALENT, so he and the GM
FIRE THE STAFF! Next ratings book they still suck
and guess what, this time the Program Director hits the
bricks. Here comes a NEW ratings book, they still suck and
finally the GM is canned...but by then the station is
a mess and for sale.

At UT, it might be best just to go on and fire the
GM first at least that way when the fans suffer
through another suck season they can say the NEW GUY
has to start over and we can see the light at the end of the
tunnel. Oh and to see that light the fans will come back
and pay their blood money for the rite to BUY a very expensive
ticket to so they can watch a suck team play. Just a thought?

Firing a coordinator in midseason has precedent.

Remember back in the late 80's when UT fired the defensive coordinator after, what, a 0-5 start?

Couple of things, the election is not over but actually getting very close. MSNBC Chris Mathews was laughing at the fact that the polls are now showing it close and NBC dropped all number reporting on the TODAY SHOW along with CBS and ABC on their morning shows. They moved back their reporting of how much is spent on the republican VP candidates clothes and really pounded their story of what they call the racists remarks of the McCain camp when refering to Obama as a Socialists.

As for the coach, he knows the game has passed him and has been hinting about it in press conferences. Even when Cutclif returned he saw the lack of talent compared to when he left. UT can recruit but not on the level as they did when they were winning.

Word inside the team is the new guy in the press box is NOT calling the plays and even if he is, remember who hired him.

Phil and the fans know it is over and time for him to go.

Police prepare for unrest

Police departments in cities across the country are beefing up their ranks for Election Day, preparing for possible civil unrest and riots after the historic presidential contest.

Some worry that if Barack Obama loses and there is suspicion of foul play in the election, or the thousands of dead voters signed up by ACORN don't get to vote, violence could ensue in cities with large black populations.

Democratic strategists and advocates for black voters say they understand officers wanting to keep the peace, but caution that excessive police presence could intimidate voters, especially the felons, crack heads, and drunks ACORN signed up.

What if McCain had only married once and Obama was a divorcee?

What if Obama was the candidate who left his first wife after a severe disfiguring car accident, when she no longer measured up to his standards?

What if Obama had met his second wife in a bar and had a long affair while he was still married?

What if Michelle Obama was the wife who not only became addicted to pain killers but also acquired them illegally through her charitable organization?

What if Cindy McCain graduated from Harvard?

What if Obama had been a member of the Keating Five? (The Keating Five were five United States Senators accused of corruption in 1989, igniting a major political scandal as part of the larger Savings and Loan crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s.)

What if McCain was a charismatic, eloquent speaker?

What if Obama couldn't read from a teleprompter?

What if Obama was the one who had military experience that included discipline problems and a record of crashing seven planes?

What if Obama was the one who was known to display publicly, on many occasions, a serious anger management problem?

What if Michelle Obama's family had made their money from beer distribution?

What if the Obamas had adopted a white child?

You could easily add to this list. If these questions reflected reality, do you really believe the election numbers would be as close as they are?

This is what racism does. It covers up, rationalizes and minimizes positive qualities in one candidate and emphasizes negative qualities in another when there is a color difference.

What a great weekend for UT. A win is a win.

At work more and more of my friends are talking about the election and at least they are going to vote, some for the first time.

Being East Tennessee, we are just about all republicans but we had a few from our side say they were going to vote for the "other guy" until General Powell came out for him.

If the man who sat at the big table at the UN and talked talked them into backing us on the WAR is now an Obama supporter then that is all it took for these turn coat republicans to come back over to McCain.

It is great to see the race becoming close again, never forget Carter had Ronnie until the last week!

Ed.....Carter was a mess and history
will mark him as the worst president
of modern time. Still he was up there
until the last because his party
so hated the conservative movement

Obama is the last chance we the USA have of redeeming our
respect in the rest of the world, we are hated by every country and most of our own citizens hate us because of what we have become.

We are not the country of Bill Clinton or Jimmy Carter and unless we all vote to get Obama elected we will pay the price around the world.

Sean Penn visits Venezuela's Chavez for 2nd time

CARACAS, Venezuela - U.S. actor Sean Penn is visiting Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez - again.

Venezuela's state-run news agency reports that Penn accompanied Chavez during the inspection of a natural gas pipeline on Sunday and
then several crack pipes on Monday afternoon.

Chavez has praised Penn for his criticism of the U.S. war in Iraq, and for being a tiny little man but still able to marry Madonna and make her
scream in an erotic frenzy when he dressed in
a clown wig and did the dirty Pedro to her
in the back seat of his 62 VW Bug. Although he did not mention Penn's visit during a televised address he did broadcast images of the Oscar-winning actor slapping a small child who was wearing a

Chavez has hosted visits by several Hollywood stars including actors Danny Glover, Kevin Spacey, the late Flicka, Jane Fonda, Adolph Hitler the Third, and Dan Rather. British supermodel Naomi Campbell visited last year, while on a cocaine buying trip and expressed her support for Chavez's efforts to help the poor stay that way.

At a business summit on energy, Politickerma.com reports, a prominent supporter of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Mass., made a crack about Sen. John McCain's age.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Mr. Blackwell, the acerbic designer whose annual worst-dressed list skewered the fashion felonies of celebrities from Zsa Zsa Gabor to Britney Spears, has died. He was 86.

Publicist Harlan Boll says Blackwell died Sunday of complications from an intestinal infection.

Blackwell, whose first name was Richard, was a little-known dress designer when he issued his first tongue-in-cheek criticism of Hollywood fashion disasters for 1960—long before Joan Rivers and others turned such ridicule into a daily affair.

Year after year, he would take Hollywood's reigning stars and other celebrities to task for failing to dress in what he thought was the way they should.Mr. Blackwell will be buried in a baby shit yellow coat, a snot green dicky, a lovely pollester steaming cow pie brown shirt and no pants under the dinosaur hole at Sir Gooney Golf on Kingston Pike in Knoxville Tennessee.
