I am blessed to still see the over nights for Knoxville television and the numbers that keep spilling out of Nielson have to give the children who play in the mansion on Broadway pause. The journalists at WVLT are drawing viewers to their local news despite the fact that Katie is running them away. If you look at the numbers you might draw the conclusion the new viewers are moving from WATE to WVLT. At 6 p.m. WVLT is right at the door of WATE and often at 11 they are beating them. Considering the fact that they (WVLT) own the noon local news in the market you have to wonder what in the name of instant ratings happened to the first TV station to go on the air in Knoxville.

Hey, don’t look at me that way. I think WATE has strong reporters now, a sports guy that rocks and faces on the anchor desk that are both known and respected. All of us moan about their reporting style, you know the breaking news that really isn’t breaking and the just in garbage that was in yesterday but even that can grow on you. With their network news (ABC) coming up and WVLT network news (CBS) anchored by a scary woman who couldn’t get a beagle to watch her if she had a ham around her neck you would have to think 6 should be kicking 10 rather than having 8 chew then a new hole in their slacks. Anyway, here is a look at one of the overnights this week, just so WATE won’t get the vapors. Just when you thought the new Queen of Mean was headed back to Miami NBC and CBS are hinting they want to give her a job! I kid you not; the Large Marge member of the View may be headed for bigger and better things since her dust up (make that continuous dust ups) on the Ba Ba chat show. Bless his heart, Tennessee’s almost favorite son; ALGORE is catching it again over his global warming myth. Hang on, before you go all left wing on me I TRIED to watch his movie on HBO the other night and when he started mumbling about how the creek he played in as a kid has changed now I had to give it up.

Heavens Mr. Gore I played in Pistol Creek as a kid and it also has changed. Back then it was so polluted you could toss a roll of film in behind the Down Yonder Saloon and it would be developed before it got to the back of the J&K Feed store! Man between the outhouses that dumped directly into it across from the cemetery to the pigs and cows that took their daily constitutional in it out at the Pearson Farm that creek stunk worse than a commission meeting in Knoxville. Yep my creek has changed also Al, like yours mine is CLEANER, smells BETTER, and has become a major asset to our downtown. His creek story made me bail and today there is a new report on his grand plan of warming that just might make him think twice about crawling up on that rickety platform if he wants to try again for the White House. A really fun read is coming out on Hillary, kinda shows you some new and exciting sides about the woman who would be Queen. The scary thing is even before the excerpts are leaked to FOX News Obambomber is starting to dash by her in the polls! selling the questionable credits.


Kind of like the old days when Reverend Jim Baker took viewers money to build a water slide at Heritage USA and then charged them to slide down it when the visited! That was good but ALGORE is now officially in second place!

Sen. Tim Burchett (R-Knoxville) is proud to announce that the Senate passed Senate Bill 1264 by a vote of 29-0. The bill closes a loophole that allows elected officials to run again after being convicted of an infamous crime related to their public office.
“We are elected by the people to serve the people,” said Burchett. “Corrupt politicians who abuse the people’s trust do not deserve a second chance.”
Current law allows elected officials who have been convicted of an infamous crime while in public office to seek election again if their citizenship rights have been restored. Senate Bill 1264 permanently disqualifies these individuals from seeking public office again.
Before becoming law, the House must pass the bill and the Governor must sign it.

Clear Channel is kicking around the idea of commercial free radio. The colossal media animal wants to test the waters in Texas. KZPS in Dallas will no longer run traditional 30- or 60-second advertisements. Instead, advertisers sponsor an hour of programming, during which a D.J. will promote its product conversationally in what the company calls integration.

Fox ran some of the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner live over the weekend but they missed the best part of the show. While they were showing Rich Little, Sheryl Crow and "Inconvenient Truth" producer Laurie David walked over to Table 92 at the Hilton Washington to chat with Karl Rov .

Sheryl was hot on global warming and let Karl have it with both barrels. Get this; one of her thoughts to save mother earth is for all of us to use ONE square of TP after we take our morning constitutional! I swear on my youngest dogs head I am NOT making this up! Before you say her thoughts are of the same substance as that which is removed with her suggested single square check out the carbon footprint she leaves when she is out picking and grinning for the folks around the country. Smoking Gun has her demands and you can bet your “donkey” they have no mention of Charmin rationing!

COWARDS KICK AWAY ANOTHER PIECE OF AMERICA'S SOUL

April 15, 2007 -- Author, musician and former Texas gubernatorial candidate Kinky Friedman has been friends with Don Imus since 1975, when they met on stage at The Bottom Line.
I MET Imus on the gangplank of Noah's Ark. He was then and remains today a truth-seeking missile with the best bull-meter in the business.

Far from being a bully, he was a spiritual chop-buster never afraid to go after the big guys with nothing but the slingshot of ragged integrity. I watched him over the years as he struggled with his demons and conquered them. This was not surprising to me.

Imus came from the Great Southwest, where the men are men and the emus are nervous. And he did it all with something that seems, indeed, to be a rather scarce commodity these days. A sense of humor.

There's no excusing Imus' recent ridiculous remark, but there's something not kosher in America when one guy gets a Grammy and one gets fired for the same line.

The Matt Lauers and Al Rokers of this world live by the cue-card and die by the cue-card; Imus is a rare bird, indeed - he works without a net. When you work without a net as long as Imus has, sometimes you make mistakes.

Wavy Gravy says he salutes mistakes. They're what makes us human, he claims. And humanity beyond doubt, is what appears to be missing from this equation. If we've lost the ability to laugh at ourselves, to laugh at each other, to laugh together, then the PC world has succeeded in diminishing us all.

Political correctness, a term first used by Joseph Stalin, has trivialized, sanitized and homogenized America, transforming us into a nation of chain establishments and chain people.

Take heart, Imus. You're merely joining a long and legendary laundry list of individuals who were summarily sacrificed in the name of society's sanctimonious soul: Socrates, Jesus, Galileo, Joan of Arc, Mozart and Mark Twain, who was decried as a racist until the day he died for using the N-word rather prolifically in "Huckleberry Finn."

Speaking of which, there will always be plenty of Al Sharptons and Jesse Jacksons around. There will be plenty of cowardly executives, plenty of fair-weather friends, and plenty of Jehovah's Bystanders, people who believe in God but just don't want to get involved. In this crowd, it could be argued that we need a Don Imus just to wake us up once in a while.

There probably isn't a single one of Imus' vocal critics who come anywhere close to matching his record of philanthropy or good acts on this earth.

Judge a man by the size of his enemies, my father used to say. A man who, year after year, has raised countless millions of dollars and has fought hand-to-hand to combat against childhood cancer, autism, and SIDS - well, you've got a rodeo clown who not only rescues the cowboy, but saves the children as well.

I believe New York will miss its crazy cowboy and America will miss the voice of a free-thinking independent-minded, rugged individualist. I believe MSNBC will lose many viewers and CBS radio many listeners.

Too bad for them. That's what happens when you get rid of the only guy you've got who knows how to ride, shoot straight and tell the truth.

Broadcast Icon Feted Over The Weekend


Regional Broadcast God CP (Curtis Parham) was honored by a host of family, friends, and associates at his surprise 60th birthday party deep in the wilds of west Knox county Friday evening.

The aged announcer was ushered to the gathering in a long white limousine outfitted by Rick’s Bar and The Shady Rest Home for the Decrepit. Photos of the event have already been banned from thousands of papers including the Knoxville News Senile, The South Pittsburgh Bugle, and Becks Beer Buddies.

Don Imus is toast. Last night CBS dropped him following the cancellation of his TV broadcast yesterday by NBC. The debate now is NOT if he should have been fired but why Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson were allowed to run point on getting the job done?

This morning the thought is could the impact of these two Reverends involvement cloud both the meaning and the results of the dismissal?

Noted columnist L.Brent Bozell does a beautiful job in both shinning the light on these two alleged men of god and their
Involvement in the case. He writes, “The raging media controversy over the stupid racial insult Imus threw at the Rutgers women’s basketball team – “nappy-headed hos” – has led the usual cast of professional victims, like Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and the NAACP, to deplore the racist underbelly of the broader American culture.” Click here to read his entire column.

As for the firing yesterday by MSNBC, Imus could be better off away from the struggling cable channel. The infamous Dick Gregory worked with an MSNBC flack to try to actually involve the President of the United States into the Imus incident.

In a side bar Durham County District Attorney Mike Nifong has now apologized to the Duke players but when asked if he (Reverend Jesse Jackson) would also apologize his answer was a firm NO!

Again, the issue is no longer Imus. The issue now is will these two fanners of hate be given an open door to corporations to sit at the table in their decision making of who goes and who stays. More importantly will the left wing media continue to enable the two men to the extend their viewers and readers actually think they are the arbitrators for an entire race? Scary thoughts.








NBC has tossed Imus from their struggling cable station. The head of NBC News told the infamous Dick Gregory the reason was internal e mails from staff demanding the network adhere to their decency policy.

At first blush NBC tried to milk the story. Arbitron overnights showed MSNBC morning viewership exploded the day after the remark. Only when major sponsors ran from the show did the company “spin” their decision in the moral direction. The other campus involved in the horrid miscarriage of justice and home of accuser Crystal Gail Mangum, N.C. Central University is still confused over the declared innocence of the three students.

A clue to why these young men were “robbed” of their lives could be in the accuser’s background. The IMUS posts are heating up! On day whatever of DONFALLSONHISSWORD lots of very sleazy dynamics are starting to emerge, and more than a few are directly caused by Don Imus. As the posts reflect, the remark was bad and the people who are surrounding themselves in the issue are worse. From the left wing driven NBC news organization all the way over to FOX this thing has become the new “Anna Nicole” story and all of the reports are more agenda driven than any thing ever spewed by either Dan Rather OR Katie Couric. Don, shut up and let this thing deflate!

First, unlike most hacks who write about radio I happen to know folks who actually have worked in the pit and they all will tell you at one time or another they have said SOMETHING they wish they hadn’t on the air. Here is what they tell me they did when they said that BAD thing.



1. Swear on their mother’s eyes they didn’t say it (before someone finds the tape)
2. Blame it on the engineer (after the tape is found)
3. Take a leave of absence for one week(try to hide the tape)
4. Take a perminate leave of absence. (after the tape is introduced in court)



Good old 60 something year old Don Imus has been caught in the web of advanced technology and is having a hell of a time getting out. Bless his crusty heart in 2007 there isn’t even a tape to hide! Pop your Pie Hole Don and before you can say, “George Bush is a fool” your words are splattered from U Tube to multiple hard drives in all those scary places with only letters for names. You know like NAACP, FCC, RPC, CORE, SNIC, and even the SEC!

The big question now for Don is how does he put things right with the left, the middle, the right, and his audience? His show is built on saying things that hang right on the edge with most folks and cause the rest of us to say “TELL ME HE DIDN’T JUST SAY THAT ON THE RADIO!” This morning that famed Imus edge was butter knife smooth, and duller than a Clinton state of the union speech. I swear I thought the old man was going to cry a few times and his skinny producer/wild side kick was quiet as a church mouse in time out.

The I Man didn’t do a show he conducted a funeral and it was painful to watch.

When he announced he was going on the Al Sharpton radio show later today to make nice they should have run a big crawl under him saying THE SHARK WAS JUMPED AND THE OLD MAN HAS OFFICIALLY LEFT THE BUILDING. A word of advice to Mr. Don, no matter how bad your transgressions never cuddle up to those who feed on miss steps. You will not find forgiveness. Also remember if you are far enough to the LEFT you can say any dang thing and walk away without a scratch. Want proof? Check out Jesse Jackson and the lovely way he described a major city as having a large Jewish population! Then magnify the JESSE persona a few hundred times and you have the Reverend Al Sharpton.

Does the I Man have any options? Sure, shut up and go back to doing your show. Apologizing to the likes of Al and Jesse will only throw high test on the flames. Remember Jimmy The Greek? I Man you don’t want to be Jimmy The Greek, duck and cover for a few weeks at your ranch till CNN decides if you are still left wing enough to be forgiven and then pop back up!





GLOBAL WARMING took it in the shorts this Easter in Rockford. It was so cold we had to take flowers out to Daddy’s grave Easter morning rather than on the Friday before and this year the only ones that would hang in for the entire day were pansies! I love the new report from MIT that says yep it is getting warmer and yep it has in the past and will in the future. I am sure it won’t make the main stream media but it sure is fun to e mail to all my liberal buds who think AGORE running will be bigger than what was celebrated at sunrise Sunday morning!

Children of the 50s and 60s I am here to tell you the new band “The Mountain Folk Reunion” that played Saturday evening at Music Row is a must see. From this humble tired old writer's point of view I can honestly say they are better looking than the Rolling Stones, sing better than The Association and Bread combined and unlike the Dixie Chickens looked to be playing their own instruments! They have an open invitation to post any and all of their future performances right here along with their softened and air brushed photographs!

WHERE AGAIN? Music Row in Maryville is located on East Lamar Alexander Parkway (US Highway 321) just 1.8 miles past Blount Memorial Hospital heading towards Townsend, TN. On the RIGHT side of the road and is in the former IGA store.

WHAT TIME AGAIN? The Mountain Folk Reunion band will go on stage at 8 P.M. for a full half hour. The band will be in a practice room between 7:30 and 8 and everyone is invited to drop by to bother them as they warm up!

WHO? The Mountain Folk Reunion Band! Four fine looking elder statesmen of the late 50s and 60s folk scene whose day jobs include computers, newspaper reporting, cooking, and slumlord!

WHAT KIND OF MUSIC? The band’s name gives you a major clue. Tunes on April 7th will include… “This Little Light Of Mine”, “Sloop John B”, “It Takes A Worried Man To Sing A Worried Song”, “Georgia Stockade”, and many more you will remember from your days of campfires and porch picking.

WHO ARE THESE BOYS? Bobby, Kelly, Vern and Walker are all eligible for AARP but as of last night could still drive, eat both hard and soft food and be trusted to come home before dark.

HOW MUCH IS IT? This historic first play out concert is absolutely free and it don’t cost nothing either!

STILL thinking about the mountains! Great time to visit although the dogwoods are not out yet. Back to the report later this week.

We have visiting kin from the west in and spent a few days in the hills with them.

VOLS WIN AND SO DOES CBS!





Big Weekend for TV, CBS has the NCAA and it paid off for them big time! The EYE network won nationally and later today when we get the local numbers a good bet would be WVLT won also. VOLS are back in the SWEET SIXTEEN at the end of the week and CBS will again have the coverage. I know the LADY VOLS played also and I caught some of the coverage on WIVK, but they always win so who cares!




The first trend of winter is out and WIVK is sucking the LIFE out of the ratings!





NO KIDDING, in the past WIVK would be in the 20s,
a HOST of stations would be in the mid to upper teens and the rest would be hanging between 0 and 9.

Now the LOCAL RADIO RATINGS have
WIVK RUNNING all the other stations way
under the front porch!

Trends are not books but if you look at the
past numbers here you can see WIVK keeps getting
stronger while the others just evaporate!

This bird rolled into WNOX in 1969 hung around for a few months and headed north. Today he is back across the pond doing The Late Show on Manx Radio, Isle of Man, British Isles. DID YOU TURN YOU’RE CLOCK FORWARD…NO HOLD ON..DID YOU TURN IT BACK..NO I THINK IT WAS FORWARD, OR WAS IT BACK?? OH FORGET IT


There are some good thoughts about WATE on Jump The Shark this week. Your Media Maven took a hard right to the crotch from one of their anonymous posters last week when he tossed in his two cents worth on the fate of the station. Naturally the reply to the vituperative shot was so good it drove the poster underground. Shark is talking about who knows what inside the walls of 6 and it is more than worth a click over to his site to read his thoughts.

Some children think I have a problem with WATE because three of their kids called up the Shopper when I posted their ratings in my column. While they had the ear of the former owner of the paper they also cried over me posting on Gene’s blog. I was told by said former owner to stop because I represented the paper (I had NO idea at that time other Shopper “writers” were posting on radical left wing blogs or I sure would have continued on Gene’s) and I agreed to stop. So far I have not visited it (Gene’s) since due to the pure work it takes to find the thing. Later the former owner of the Shopper said they were going to drop my column in the fall and they sure did.

Truth is if I didn’t have GMs calling a paper now and then to howl about me I would feel very unloved. Even though the trio from Six has bragged openly they are the reason I am no longer making that seven figure salary at the Shopper I have zero animosity toward them. Granted I had to pull my dawgs out of Doggie Day Care and the Golden (see THE BOSS) will no longer be attending an Ivy League University next fall,but the good news is the financial set back has been erased by my paper route (The Grit) and my new Amway distributorship.

The cloud is not hanging over the Rockford Bunker. The real storm is just out Broadway. WATE has to change their news operation if they want to justify their advertising rates.

Breaking NEWS, Shaky Cams, This Just In, More at 11 and STORM TEAM REPORTS (on clear beautiful days) have proven to be just the ticket to drive viewers on up the street. WBIR is killing 6 in the news casts of record (sorry but 5 p.m. isn’t one of them) and even WVLT has eased up and past them in certain time periods. IF the station is for sale, and about the only ones who say it isn’t are those who could very well be given the gate when the new owners arrive, it needs to have a plan to fix their local news. IF it is already sold then that new plan may or may not include those who produce the product that so far has floundered at best and run viewers away at the worst.

I would suggest you visit Jump The Shark for their thoughts before you touch one off across our bow, they seem to have some insight into the station, and it is more than worth a read.

WATE has a new boss!
The first word out of the home office was they were going to run Knoxville's first TV
station from Nashville, and it still looks like the new GM will do double duty with 6 and her other station. The move went right along with the whispers that Young was trying to sell their stations and move 6 into the black.

The buzzzz this morning is about how FAST the suits moved to get a new Top Dawg in Jan's chair. Some say the fix was in before Wade had her U Haul loaded, who knows?
The February book was not very kind to the local news department at 6, but none of the moles are saying if the new leader came with marching orders for news or not? GOOD TUESDAY MORNING KIDS!


Under the heading RADIO GONE WILD a morning show in Austin, Texas may have stepped
deeper into it than the time THE GREASE MAN gave his now famous thought on how to get six days off after Martin Luther King Day. These two boys
in Austin used the "D" WORD when talking about about a democrat's thoughts on Hilla's new thorn, oBOMBER.

MONDAY

Local TV ratings are out and CHANNEL 10 says: The February 2007 Nielsen rating sweep concluded with WBIR-TV delivering the #1 news and most of the top 40 programs in the Knoxville DMA. WBIR-TV also delivers 23 of the top 40 shows in first two weeks of Feb’07 sweeps.

National TV ratings are rocking some worlds!
NBC is still the puppy to beat but it sure is getting easier!

THE TODAY SHOW is cracking but their cracks are nothing like the ones forming under their Nightly News.


The CBS investment is going south faster than you can say..put another filter on Katie I can still see the lines in her eyes. Yep, the left wing voice and potential answer to the Dan (AS LONG AS IT NAILS BUSH WHO CARES IF IT IS TRUE OR NOT) Rather problem is not having a celebration over today's numbers.

HILLA tries to be SOUTHERN, you have to HEAR IT to believe it!

Because you get so sick of the blog being a one trick pony we are going to be adding fun things every dang day of the dang week. Most will be linked so you can read the rest of the story at your leisure, and naturally more than a few will have a right wing tilt just to jack with the left!.

Biggest media SNAFU had to be Jeff Jarnigan’s woops at the UT/Florida game. Lofton was shooting a foul shot and Jeff shot off his MOUTH causing a miss. No kidding… me and 24,000 of my best friends were all watching him shoot (sure would have been nice if Jeff had been) and heard the chatter that caused Lofton to miss the shot. SOME moles inside the bunker at B97 were whispering that Jarnigan was having his calls screened rather heavily the first of the week. Bless his heart, if Pearl was really pissed he wouldn’t call he would just drop by and kick him off the side of Sharps Ridge. Upside is UT home games and Jarnigan have many months to recover, downside is Pearl knocking on Jarnigan’s door with an 8 iron in his hand!


More than a few local TV blogs are running polls asking for your vote on your favorite weather person. Last one I saw had Julya Johnson WAY out front with Opie coming in second. Sorry but none of the tribe today can hold a pointer (yea they used to use them back in the days when Margie did the 11 after singing with Big Jim Hess at the Bimbo Inn lounge) to my man Johnny Mountain. He had more fun doing the weather than Cas Walker did when someone handed him by mistake one of those big flash cards that said KOTEX. Another story for another day. Julya has come along way but for my money you can’t beat the gal on WVLT. I have yet to really listen when she does the weather but by golly the dogs and I never miss her doing it!

Ann Coulter had the BEST come back to those who were mad at her accusing Edwards of being a butt monkey! When she said she would never insult Gay Folks by saying Edwards was a memeber of their tribe!

Bill Maher may have stepped on his incredibly short pal on HBO when he said lives could be saved if the VP of the United states had been killed.


Gallup poll says most of the left wingers think Al Gore couldn’t win if he got in the race. I personally want Al in the thing so we can kick his donkey again and get his movie moved out of the documentary category and on to the contrived fiction shelf. Come on Al engage!
