Just got a "comment" that
reminded me to tell the staff
we ARE a media reporting type
blog. It also included some good
info and a question.
Here it is:

The station was recently purchased by Knoxville minister Barry Culberson and his organization Progressive Media Inc.(WIFA-AM) for $2.4 million and changed the calls from WBZH-FM to WIJV-FM. Looks like someone finally wised up and got a commercial FM station to fight it out with the non-profit Love 89 for the religious bucks in town. They are also broadcasting on 107.3, so watch out Love 89! This station could be a real money-maker in a day when the other stations (not WIVK) are scrambling to turn a profit. Your thoughts, Walker? Answer..
First it is great someone would drop that kind of money on ANY radio station
today! The industry is shaking in various ways and more than a few
who would have loved to have owned property are now backing down.
That said, if I were an owner I would be looking
at the big picture and trying to set MY STATION
above the pack. Face it MUSIC formats are coming under
fire from so many fronts now and their life blood
(YOUNG LISTENERS) are downloading like mad. When I got to
UT we had a kid on our floor who sold something illegal thus he had
piles of money. This kid bought some really big reel to reel units and
would dub LPs on to tape. The part we thought was beyond cool was
he had all these great songs back to back just like Hit Parade (the old WBIR FM
format) played. THEN he went next level and wired a little cassette recorder into his car, dubbed down from the big reels and with a little speaker hanging out of
his glove compartment...DROVE AROUND LISTENING TO ALL THESE TUNES! Lord help we
were not WORTHY!!!
Today kids do this with an MP3 and a docking station and laugh at you if you
ask if they are listening to the radio!
Winners in the game today are going to have to look out of the box...forget
the old ways and find something to bring folks back. Locally, the numbers (ratings) are falling across the board and with the exception of WIVK,
I would say every station in town would love to find a new path
to boost Ad dollars.
Answer to your question...after all that is
I would LOVE to see someone jump out with that NEW THING
that would bring folks back to what we grew up with. Kids
are SO missing the radio family and so are us AARP Members.

Amen! and Amen! As a native Blount County residence I completely agree. Just trying to get to Knox County to work is bad enough and the traffic here in Maryville is shameful for a small town(Well we used to be). Let Ms Cawood and all her cronies stay in Knoxville and get out of government there and not even think about getting in government in Maryville.
Maryville was just a back
woods town until we (sorry but I am one of those Yankees) moved there.
Now because of CERTAIN new faces in politics and much more progressive thinking WE are changing the town into a place
that is both livable and
open to "progressive" views.
Maryville now actually has a blog that states the real issues of the town and county and how we are working to drag it into the 19th century!

How could WALKER give advice about radio...all he ever did was get FIRED from stations!
I don't even remember where the local stations are on the dial. XM family here and yes we also have Ipods.
I do remember doing homework
and talking on the phone to my girlfriend while The Brothers
dedicated a song to her from me.
Is there anyone on at night in Knoxville now?
That's all we need. Another christian station on the airwaves in Knoxville. Like we didn't have enough already.
Plus they have taken 107.3-FM which could have been a potential LPMF. I am so sick and tired of these other already existing radio stations hogging up the FM Dial with their translators.
These frequencies should be reserved for "Indepedent LPFMs" instead of wasting that particular frequency with a station that already exists.
If a radio station can't cover a certain area with the frequency they are already on, well that's too bad. That's just the way it is, and they should not be allowed to hog up other frequencies just in order to increase their coverage area.
I hope all these already existing radio stations go belly up eventually. Commercial Radio Sucks!
Folks, I've said it before and I'll say it again: a radio station needs to be involved in the community in order to be a viable part of the community. Anybody can plug in a jukebox and play the hits.
A local station can (and does) work when it becomes involved in community events and gives listeners a reason to listen. Music alone ain't gonna get it.

Radio use to be fun.
I am a huge music lover, however without the local community events, station promotions, and radio talent, playing 10,000 songs, or "Commercial Free Music", is still not going to cut the mustard.
Radio is more than just music for sure. I miss a lot of the radio talent that we had on the airwaves here in Knoxville at one time.
I also remember some of the publicity stunts that some of the more wilder jocks use to pull on the air.
What I wouldn't give to hear a "Boogie Check".
