NBC NETWORK NEWS FLUSHED!

ACADEMY AWARD MESS

ANNA AND COUNCIL
LOST LOCAL NEWS DEPARTMENTS
PAPER OF RECORD
FOOLISH FOLLIES
NO EASTER, THEY FOUND THE BODY!
ANOTHER MEGA EXAMPLE OF GLOBAL WARMING!

Sunday’s Top 5 programs in the Knoxville DMA:

WATE/ABC Academy Awards (830p) 15.1 (average to 1215p)
WTNZ/FOX NASCAR (330p) 14.0 (average to 745p)
WATE/ABC RD-Oscar (8p) 12.3
WBIR/NBC 10 News (6p) 10.6
WBIR/NBC Sunday Today (8a) 10.0

The difference in this years Academy Awards and a fifty
gallon bucket of horse droppings is THE BUCKET!

No kidding, we started early this afternoon with the E channel (everyone voted against Joan Rivers and her child on TV Guide) and hung in until 10:00 EST. Bless your hearts if you continued with this boring insider driven concrete filled balloon, you are better than we are!

Remember the days when they said “Earlier the Academy gave the award to the best teaser of nose hairs to Skullman Smoot for his work in Late Last Night The Fog Felt Like Dripping Snot? Not tonight kids, every T tiny category was given the full treatment eating time and more importantly quarter hour ratings. It was like watching The Price Is Right without the big breasted contestants running down the aisle and Bob Barker off the Prozac. So at 10:05 PM I have no idea what the best pictures was, who won best actor, or if ALGORE came back to mug yet a second time to his Hollywierd minions and the truth is I just don’t care! E mail or post your thought if you fought the good fight and managed to stay up. I really did feel sorry for Peter O’Tool even after all his face lifts his eyes were still drooping.

Locally who thinks the media coverage of the Knox County Commission abortion has major similarities to the Anna Nicole story? Both involve characters who would not know the truth if it flew out their shorts and poo pooed on their flip flops, and both stories are harder to turn away from than a train hitting a midget Corvette filled with Rotarians crashing the Mummer's Parade.

This weekend it really looked like the paper of record (yea that one) had sided up with Rags although they didn’t have the hanger downs to admit that their boss… NOT the paper is the one lawing the county. Anyone find it kinda cool to see the county bow their back and threaten to pull their advertising? Let’s face it, when you are driven NOT by ethics but by dollars, such a threat can make you forget what your Grandfather said about “never assume it is only a fart unless you are willing to personally scrub the brown lines out of your skivvies.” I don’t have a clue if the county can pull all those legal notices they file out of the paper or not, but if they could I bet The Journal would flat give them a much better rate!

As Anna starts to rot and stink, so goes the world of the coverage of Knox County politics. Also just like Anna, nothing is what it seems. If that baby was not worth millions do you think all of those gutter snipes would be popping up to declare “Daddyship” of the thing? Same here in River City, why would people with pasts as jaded as the Guess Your Weight dude at the fair be willing to let the media shine its light on them? Simple, follow the money! Lots to be made if that kid is really the fruit of your loins and even more to be made if you are about a third crooked and a newly appointed member of Knox County Government. The big question is where are our electronic and print journalist during this low water make of integrity? I kinda thought I would give Gene Patterson one more chance this morning but then I noticed it was noon and I still had not read the Maryville Daily Times, I fired up some new age channel on XM and rocked back to see if any of my classmates had assumed room temperature. After marking out the noon hour for Gene last week and taking a sucker kick between the legs, I felt my time this week would be better served by perusing the Times.

Anyway, that is the rant for the weekend, thanks for all the comments last week and I will continue posting ratings as they come it. Do you think it really is FOX exposing NBC’s left wing agenda that is causing the Peacock to drop like Chubby Checker through a skylight, or is it just the fact that ABC is giving us more news and less paid experts? Discuss and post.

SUNDAY!
Gene blew it
Posts from last week
Abby is not a Ham BONE
Ratings

Last week the media star was the late great JOE ANDERSON.
This week I want you to tell me where the above picture was taken!
Clue... The street rhymes with what costs a buck at the golden arches.

ABBY has SPOKEN at Knoxtrivia do you believe her?

I was hoodwinked, snookered, suckered, and taken by all the blog hype concerning the giant blow up set for Sunday on the WATE political talk show! Although it was my mom’s 91st birthday I canned the Birthday Lunch at the Hilton and made her bail early out of the Knoxville First Baptist service so I could have WATE warmed up and ready to go at noon.

So??? So WHAT! The first half was Gene and Rags playing nice. Only spicy question was when Patterson asked the county mayor if his recommended ethics committee could have members other than elected officials? Rags said no and then after he explained it dropped in something like if one of the people he asked to be on said no which he said was highly unlikely then he could ask a citizen to be a member. Lord help, first no and then yes? Patterson was tossed a nice slow pitch down the middle and just watched it go into the catcher’s glove for a called strike? Anyway, I blew it off thinking Gene was going to nail him in the next segment and he didn’t wanta tip his hand early!

Then the last segment! Here come the fireworks! Normandy, Boomsday, Hiroshima AND Nagasaki set to blow right there in my bunker!!!

Here is the way it went down. Gene said the report issued the last days of the former High Sheriff concerning Tyler Harber called the Rags a teller of tall tales, a prevaricator, a well you know the L word. Rags wanted to know who made the claims and where were they in the report.

Gene stammered a bit.

Gene kinda looked at his notes.

Gene then said he had not really looked at the report as much as he should have but that it said it. Rags implied that Gene had best have his facts in line before he made such a call about someone and Gene kept saying it was in the report although he couldn’t produce the page, the paragraph, or who said it.

Brothers and sisters if we watch any of the NATIONAL political Sunday shows we know the way to play GOTCHA is to HAVE the quote or the source on the screen when you ask the question. Lord help at least have it on the table with the parts high lighted so you can shove it in the victim's face when he tries to bob and weave! As for Rags getting agitated, well yes, but from what I was told on Gene’s blog, I thought we would see the veins in his teeth and fists flying. The second Gene could NOT produce the source Rags had him nailed and just pushed him around a little to make him squirm a bit. It was not worth missing a birthday lunch (actually moved it to an early birthday dinner) or cutting out of Knoxville First Baptist early!

Upside was the last of the show had Lloyd on and it was good to hear him back on the air. Bless his heart despite all his good words and ideas all I could think of was he needed to put a hit out on whoever styled his hair for the show.

New ratings for the networks and the LOCAL ABC STATION (WATE) is watching their network ROCK NBC out of first place! Part of it is FOX letting people know that NBC is NOT releasing their list of P A I D experts (CNN and ABC did) and also pointing out NBC network news is on a major swing to the left. Last week ABC won and guess what, they are beating NBC again THIS WEEK!

I hope by the 08 elections the entire nation realizes most of the over the air (and CNN) network news programs are built around their agendas and flash, and little to no news reporting. If that happens voters will make up their own minds rather than letting a paid talking head do it for them.

Here is the latest ratings from the BIG DOGS.

ABC World News With Charles Gibson got more viewers in the key 25-54 demo. Last week it was No. 1 across all the demos.
Overall, World News averaged 10,060,000 total viewers, with a 2.6 rating/10 share in adults 25-54 (3,240,000 viewers). This marks nine straight weeks of growth for Gibson's World News and an 11% increase year-to-year in total viewers.
Nightly News averaged 10,170,000 total viewers and had a 2.6/9 in adults 25-54. It had a 2.6 rating/9 share in the demo, with 3,150.000 viewers.
CBS Evening News With Katie Couric averaged 7,776,000 viewers and held a 2.2 rating/8 share among the key demo, finishing third in both categories.

Some of the posts this week are being talked about at knoxviews.com. One comment on that site is asking if being a D.J. qualifies someone to be a Journalist. I was midday and then later afternoon drive NEWS anchor at WKGN in 1973 (when radio news was both respected and HARD to get into in Knoxville) and also the weekend stringer for the AP broadcast desk. As for the D.J. part, I eased back into that area for one reason MONEY! I would love to post my answer to the "shot at Knoxviews.com but they have banned me for life, bless their hearts. Anyway, feel free to dash over and see what is living under the rock. I thought folks like that all grew up after 1965 and became republicans...lord was I wrong! LOL

As always THANK YOU for reading and passing the Media Report along. If you are bored the other blog has some new pictures posted.

THE FIRE
and
THE OTHER STORY THAT WON'T GO AWAY!

There were multiple winners last week in the GUESS THE STAR contest. Yes it WAS Hal Hill and as we did last week the winners will get absolutely nothing.

This week our mystery media Dude or Dudetta is no longer of this earth. Here are your clues, play responsibly and the earlier you guess the faster you qualify for the grand prize given at the end of the year.
1. Yea they are dead
2. They did news and had a great face for radio
3. Their voice was not as low as POA’s but it was close
4. Heck yes it could still be a girl!
5. Their cigarette of choice was hawked by another dead local journalist
6. They did not own a lumber company
7. Their favorite expression was “I will throw him down the steps.”
8. They were the stations last news director before it went into the crapper

Last week one of my favorite local media blogs Jump the Shark jump the shark took a look at the story of the TV reporting on the fire in downtown Knoxville. I fired up the Philco around 8 a.m. and apparently missed the highlight of news battles between WBIR and another station. Jump the Shark said Abby Hambone kinda got physical with another reporter when she was trying to get an update on camera. It really sounded like a fun thing to have seen and I just hope someone TVOed the sucker and posts it on that Tube thing! The Shark also tossed out the question of which station had the best coverage. Borrowing a bit of the ABBY ATTITUDE, what say we rip off the same question and toss it out? Which station do you feel had the best fire coverage?

As for my invaluable opinion I would have to say WBIR came in last, WATE and WVLT were neck and neck for the top slot but WVLT won by a nose with their smooth style. WATE was close but they got just a little to pushy (no not HAM pushy) in trying to talk over each other with BREAKING NEWS. WVLT was the oil on the water and did very nice work for the full 8 or 9 hours of coverage. WBIR came in third because they just had to cut away so we could hear the TODAY SHOW. Excuse me? We have a fire with smoke we can see from Dude’s Grocery at Six Mile and you feel watching a mob of cold Yankees fawning over Albert Lincoln Roker is more important? Granted NBC gets their shorts in a wad if you bail on their programming, but lord help 10 YOU GUYS are reportedly the TOP local TV news operation in the valley right? The fire had everyone watching and even though you put the demolition on your web cast, by then the moment was toast.

Just my thoughts, yours are the ones that count so POST early and post often.

As for the story that won’t go away, the big paper ran some really fun letters to the editor this week cracking on the results of professional politicians playing on TV. It is a shame that the voters have a better grasp of the mess than those reporting on it. As someone asked last week, why won’t someone investigate this political train wreck rather than just spewing ideas from the passengers? To beat a dead horse one more time, the station that does get to the core of the mess is the one that will be remembered; this is a great story to build a new viewer foundation on.

No posts edited, no posters EVER BANNED!

FIRE!

THE ANSWER FOR LAST WEEK WAS frank Irwin (WKGN 1973-?) Winners will be notified by the prize patrol girl with the usual phone call, as always if a woman answers the phone at the winner’s home the PPG will hang up immediately.

This week’s media mystery member is anything but a “past” talent, but due to the wonderful exercise in democracy experienced by the taxpayers/voters of Knox County last week he has to be in the featured picture.

Clues
1. Wears hankies in his suit coat that always match his tie.
2. Weighs hundreds of pounds less than Dave
3. Has never been wrong.
4. Asked the question..WHY ARE THE CAMERAS NOT FOLLOWING THEM IN THESE RECESSES? THAT IS WHERE THE REAL STORY IS!
If you think you know who it is post your guess. Remember to read the rules on the box top carefully and if snail mailing in your guess do not sniff your Sharpie.

LOTS going on last week but the most fun media event of not only the week but the new year and I bet the decade had to be the web cast on WBIR covering the appointments of characters to the term limited Knox County Commission seats. Due to the fact the GPS coordinates of my bunker are south of the Knox county line, I am allowed to smell but not step in the political world of the home of Cas Walker. I still have to confess watching the WBIR web cast was right up there with first light Katrina coverage and viewing one of the regular UT bowl debacles.

As great, great, great, grandmother used to say, “That thing had more moves that a case of X Lax and was slicker than hot snot on a pickle.” From a media standpoint the mother of all questions has to be, WHICH TV STATION WILL RUN WITH THIS STORY? No joke kids, the station that pops a tire iron under the rock and keeps their lights shinning on all that slithers beneath it could come away smelling like a rose.

This story has all the elements that East Tennessee viewers love!

First there is mystery. Do these people always run the government like this or was it just an anomaly caused by the charter mess and the compacted time situation? Oh and what about the question of how deep does this nepotistic maneuvering go? Is it in all areas of local government? How hard is it to get a list of who is kin to whom and see if they are drawing government checks because of their linage.

Next the story has the solid good and evil foundation. Most residents of the Tennessee Valley feel in their heart of hearts that few if any elected officials are honest children who color inside the lines and play by the rules. So the verification of said thought that took place at the “I will put this one in if you will do this for me” meeting makes it a wonderfully secure, if not down right warm and fuzzy launch pad for an extensive media investigation.

Last, this story will make the station that really gets into it a new family member, you know like WBIR. Ten has always been the wise Uncle at the reunion who enlightens us with the latest news. If 10 were to really get into this wild ride they could further solidify that family membership, BUT if one of the other kids wants to ease them away from the table the door is now wide open!

SO, which station will keep the light shining under the rock? Which station will look at the story and not take a side, and trust me when the smoke clears certain media outlets will turn this into a giant “Who Shot John” faster than you can say political power struggle. Send your thoughts; will it be WBIR, WATE, or WVLT? Oh and don’t forget the Big Talker, unlike the TV coverage they injected questions during the circus that most of us were thinking. Personally I think it would be outstanding to see the last radio news operation in town kick some TV donkey. Big question is WHO do you think will take this story and find out how deep this iceberg is? The floor and the e mail and the post area are wide open. EXPOUND!

Last week radio AM 1180 took the bottle of Jack Daniel and the .38 and went to the woods. This morning the station is all sports. Listening to the last Lloyd gathering I got the impression they would be coming back and a few e mails from inside their former command center backed the thought. Although their show allowed a few left wing, odd ball, types on the air in general they were never worried about rattling a cage or losing an advertiser. It is so hard to find that kind of radio today and we all are pulling for them to find a new nest in the near future.

BREAKING NEWS!!!!BREAKING NEWS!!!!!!BREAK...lord help we sound like WATE!! LOL
DASH OVER TO http://southernwriter.blogspot.com/ for a new twist in the AIR AMERICA RADIO NETWORK DEATH!

I have had more than a few gentle readers (remember when POA used to sign off with gentle listeners boy was that guy fun..right up until the day he started reporting Blount County court house gossip as fact) tell me I should start naming the folks in the old media pictures I post. How about I give you a few clues and then name them next week? You know kinda like the other contests we run here at the Report, where the prize is absolutely nothing?

This week’s picture is of a guy I worked with. See now we have narrowed down the search to seven or eight stations all in the Knoxville market! He lives in Nashville, getting warmer?? His voice is on regional and national radio spots and still heard on the banks of the Holston, getting hotter? I gave him a middle name of Potts when we worked together, on fire yet? I sang on a demo jingle for the Airport Motor Mile that he made in a studio garage that had a dirt floor, two purloined Ampex 601s and a guitar made out of a commode seat, cold again? Oh and his radio shift let him sleep in until 9 in the morning and got him off the air just before 3 in the afternoon. Got it?? GREAT, post your answer and remember follow all the contest rules on the box top or your guess will be disqualified!

I guess we should mention the media coverage of Tyler Harber. We should but man it is so convoluted (both the story and the coverage) and political it is turning into a major bore for those of us who live across the river. Don’t get me wrong, we love politics and have our share here in God’s Chosen Country (Blount County), but this one is like a sparkler just before it lets out that little glow and burns out at the wire.

Coverage kicked off Friday when TH released a report on the young man’s escapades while in the employ of the county of Knox. Three TV stations got the report (as the big paper reported, there are boxes and boxes of computer records still available to those who wanta talk about this thing) and my favorite early coverage came from WVLT. Paraphrasing their first look they said it was a big thing and they needed to take a little closer read before they really got into it. Ya know that might be one of the smarter moves by any of the electronic journalist yet! By the weekend the thing (three ring note books filled with Tyler “moves”) was being posted on the net for those who really wanted to put on the waders and slosh into the muck. I am sure by Monday Robin and John will be moving it up to third or second story, WATE will have a “shaky cam” report with someone in a Burberry running in the rain with a laptop under their arm and shielding their face from the camera with their hand, while WVLT will still be reading. Either way, the giant question is who really cares? If somehow we find there was a government employee on payroll not doing his job will we really be shocked? Hey, if we even find out said employee was a sneaky little dude who tried to hide incriminating electronics above an AC duct will we all throw up our hands in amazement and call The Voice or Hal Hill to proclaim our shock at such misuse of tax payers dollars?

You tell me. I live in Blount County and the last time I talked with our city mayor we remembered floating the Little T back in 65 trying to catch rainbows on corn I brought from the J&K. Oh and as for our political conversation, it was about a new bike trail that might be in the works running behind Blount Memorial and eventually connecting to the miles and miles of existing trails that lace around downtown. As for the Tyler fun, as we say stay tuned but man don’t center your life on this, Bruce is winning, spring practice will be here before you know it and that new radio station (the one someone put up boards saying not to dial up) is starting to catch more than a few new ears. Life is good if we don’t sweat the small stuff and remember it is ALL small stuff.

YOU GUYS HATE CHANGE!

It is fun to see how viewers react to change in our local TV world. The thing that always amazes me is how S L O W they are to realize and accept it. Brothers and sisters life in the local TV passing lane is always moving and there is nothing we can do about it.
When WBIR lost the Fountain City flash (Ted Hall) to the big leagues the unwashed had no problem at all with veteran anchor Bill Williams hitting the on deck circle. As Bill told me it just took a few minutes to acclimate himself to the chair and he was off and running. Not ONE e mail saying how much Teddy was missed, not one complaint at Bill returning, and not even a wrinkled eyebrow rocked the seamless replacement. The overnight ratings also reflected the viewer’s feelings as Bill first maintained and then grew the 6 p.m. numbers to continue the stations domination over WATE and the rest of the local news market.
Things were wonderful, the sun was shinning, sales were growing, and then as promised the power brokers at WBIR brought in a new dude. At first not a word from the peanut gallery, people were still seeing Bill doing the adoption deal and his Mission of Hope pitches, he was still there right? At last we crawled into 2007, January finally started to get cold and the viewers realized they had a new face on WBIR news. Because I am your Media Maven and my cyber door is never closed the e mailed thoughts on this new addition have been growing. Most come from folks who just now have figured out JOHN BECKER is the new guy and all of them are not sure what they think of this bird. Replacing Teddy Bob with Bill was easy, Williams was a known and respected news face. Ted was a good Live At Five guy and when he left he was missed about as long as the Uncle with the bad jokes and fake hair who shows up Christmas afternoon, makes fun of the kids and dog and is gone before the rest of the family comes over for dinner. But NOW here comes a guy we don’t know replacing Bill Williams on Knoxville’s number one local news station, time to light the pine knots and head out to Broadway!

First the notes took shots at his hair. Personally I admire a guy WITH hair, but for some reason people found his a little too something or other. Then they went after his posture, I kid you not more than a few e mails were upset over the way he sat at the dang desk, saying he was LEANING a bit too close to Robin? Excuse me? I never saw that one at all. It looked like he just sat there and did his thing but then I am still living in the dark ages with my tired old 40 something inch TV. I guess when I buy a house with a bigger wall and move up to that 50 inch plasma I will be able to see what you are seeing? My favorite e mails about the guy are the ones that just say, “I can’t put my finger on it, but there is just SOMETHING about this guy I don’t like.” Anyway after shifting through all of them I think the biggest problem he has is he is new. Next year he won’t be and he will be fine.

In his defense I will say the last few Sundays he as been doing a great job filling in on the political chat show on 10. Most of the time the show is duller than an old steak knife in a tackle box but the times I have seen him he jacked some life into the tired group. He does his homework, asks good questions, and even challenges the democrats when they try to color the discussion. If you are one of those who still are not sure about the guy, check the listings and the next time he is on the Sunday show check him out.

Oh here is a thought, do any of you think the guy who does the Halls Salvage ads and the garden guy who comes on Style and Live at Five is the same fellow? Listen to the voice! And here is another thing; are you as sick as I am of the Rock Um Sock Um Robots beating on that truck commercial? Try to watch any sporting event and NOT see that spot just won’t happen. One other thing that is getting old is the excitement over NON-WEATHER. It did not snow Monday but I had to stand in line Saturday at the bank because you guys were whipped into a weather frenzy by our local meteorologists and needed more money to get to Kroger and clean out the milk and egg aisles! Look, just remember you can go to weather.com or weather bug or a thousand other sites and see the same junk the dude or dudetta is talking about on the TV. Just like the old days of hearing John Ward screaming he is on the 40 the 30 the 20 the 10 the 5 TOUCHDOWN, while you had not only already seen the play on TV but were headed to the carport for a Schlitz and a Winston, you will have the facts way before they do! Unlax, this is East Tennessee, the weather guys and gals are never right and Kroger will take PLASTIC!

This just in! Media is a loose net catching print..tv...radio and bloggers. That said some of them slithering around in this world are not ethical or even journalist..but rather agenda driven dweebs who have both a smell about their bods and an attitude when they write. That said, read what you will about TH ( the high sheriff and who might replace him) but never forget those who put the ink to the page are are often suspect! No joke children, just hang back...disregard what they are saying and see what happens in February. Bless their hearts some are just a sad lot of tired liberals who we should all give a Christmas basket and a smile but that's about it.

TWO WEEKS LATE..SORRY

WATE News drew fire from a lawyer questioning their reporting ethics again. Rather than getting into the accusations I suggest you make friends with someone at the other news producing stations and see if they will show you the lawyer's letter. It was red hot!

Lots of questions about the expansion of WVLZ programming were in the wind late in December. The rumor was the kids at 1180 were going to lease some of the AM stations owned by Horne Broadcasting to give their shows more coverage. Then another rumor bubbled up that the folks at WVLZ were looking for a new place due to their current lease with the owners of 1180 was about to hit the expiration deadline. All we know is January 7th was the day the new lease with Horne was to have started and so far nothing has transpired. I kinda miss the old days when folks just bought stations, but heck I also miss the old days when I had a JOB on a station. LOL!

Rumors of Citadel (keeper of the keys at WIVK) selling to ABC were way off the mark. It looks like there is a better chance of Citadel BUYING ABC radio!

"Citadel Broadcasting has reportedly emerged as the front runner. The New York Times says that after entertaining several bids, Disney selected Citadel as the preferred bidder and entered into exclusive negotiations. Citadel, the nation's fifth-largest radio broadcaster, could purchase the company for nearly $3 billion. Sources told the Times that the deal could be closed within the next two weeks, but they cautioned that it's possible the talks could break down and another bidder could be chosen."

We do know that long time favorite WLIL in Lenoir City has changed hands. Remember the old days when they did commentary news and sold things people couldn't get rid of in yard sales? Heck of a fun community station back then, but the original owner passed and who knows what the future will bring? Details of the sale are:
WLIL/Lenoir City, TN Sold
BP BROADCASTERS, LLC is selling Classic Country
WLIL-A/LENOIR CITY, TN to DONALD P. FOWLER
for $500,000 cash.
The seller holds onto WKZX/LENOIR City

NOW for some fun junk! Got a great radio bud living in Florida who is always sending me blasts from the past concerning Knoxville radio. Just before Christmas this old line up from WNOX hit the cyber mail box!

WNOX line up from January '78...
6 Dr. Dave Dunaway
10 Phil Williams
2 Mike Beach
6 Scott McLeod
10 Larry Steel
2 Bill Beason

I know Bill Beason is still in the area, running a web radio station and doing voice work, Phil is over on News Talk and I got to do a "remember when" show with Mike Beach last month. I think Dr. Dave is up in Norris farming and I have no idea where Larry Steel or Scott McLeod is now.

Oh in 1978 WRJZ was two years old and just killing WNOX! Mornings found the New 62 pushing Claude Da Cat around and our night guy (John Boy of the now rich and famous John Boy and Billy) owned the market. WRJZ was the last winning AM to leave the building and until Rush came along most of the AM stations just tried to stay alive with gospel or country formats. It was another day and time and it sure was fun!

E mail me at wjonair1@aol.com with your thoughts or ideas and I will post them. If you wanta post here have at it. As always I never edit or ban anyone. This is NOT knoxviews.com; this is a wide open blog that welcomes ALL thoughts and ideas!

Sorry but this will not link you to the story..just cut and paste it and then go there, I know...by now the BOSS should have this link junk figured out..I AGREE!

The Mini-Radio Reunion

For the second year running WVLZ (1180) radio has invited burned out old DJs to tell lies around the holiday season. This year I drug in about 8 in the morning, said hello to someone in the hall who acted like he knew me, walked quickly into the control room, slammed the door, and sat down. Seconds later MIKE BEACH came in and thanked me for both not remembering who he was (I remember Beach, just didn't know the old dude in the hall) and slamming the door in his face!

Eddy Beacon did the hosting and together we covered all the old stories complete with slanderous lies about those who were either dead or not in studio. Beach told us he was the guy to first hire Mike Hammond, Eddy talked about the days he worked for the late great James Brown at his Knoxville owned radio station while I brought up the more recent Beacon Bank Robbery.

First whatever you read in the paper or saw on the television was fabricated by a local media gone wild for ratings group of Neojournalisticleftwingcommieclones driven by a blood hunger for viewers that constantly makes them kick the rules of ethics and journalism under the bus.

Beacon told us he was not involved in any bank heist, but rather innocently transporting a Doberman to Atlanta to pick up five thousand dollars for simply mounting something of the same species. As for the man with the dog, Eddy described him as a rather nice fellow with facial and body ink, stylish boots and cash money to play for the transport of said dog.

I would give you more details but I have signed an agreement with the producers of COPS to let them reveal the rest of the story. Look for it to air one week after Beacon appears on both Larry King and Nancy Grace.

HappyNewYearHaveABeerHappyNewYearSeeYouNextYear

2006 was a heck of a year for changes in both the old and new media.

Locally TV news junkies were doing double takes when about this time one of their favorites, WBIR anchor Ted Hall talked of crying children and sadness at dinner when he announced to his family he was leaving North Knoxville for Atlanta. Later we found the announcement was much happier around the dinner table when we read Ted's quotes on his new station's website in Atlanta. The real facts were simple; half of the highest rated local TV news anchor team was headed to Georgia and after earlier loosing their news director to local government the suits at WBIR had a decision to make. Granted WATE, the then number two station in the market was of little threat to 10 but still local TV news in Knoxville has been known to change quickly when talent leaves as proven by Margie Ison jumping a few decades earlier. The big guys took Bill Williams to lunch, hit him up with the idea of returning and after he pondered the deal for a day he came back to the anchor desk. Bill not only held the fort for WBIR he increased the numbers and the station continued to enjoy being the WIVK of the local TV news in the market.

In 2006 the dreaded Nielson over night ratings became a friend and a nightmare to our local TV news stations. Rather than hanging out for a quarter to see if those astronomical local news advertising prices were justified the clients could check out this column weekly to see who was winning who was coming close and who was dieing on the vine. At first those who took it on the chin said the numbers were not valid but that talk evaporated as more homes joined the sample. By the end of 2006 the over nights were showing WBIR still doing fine with Bill in the chair, WVLT winning at noon and more often than not at 11 and WATE slowly leaving the building in local TV news.

2006 will be known also as the year they began to prove to both the market and more importantly the advertisers that WVLT was on the fast track to become the new number two local news station. Big news considering WATE has been a solid number two for decades and WVLT has been a distant third. 2007 could be a new ballgame for all three of the local news stations (I know about FOX but their local is WATE produced) with WBIR now replacing Bill with a new face both 6 and 8 will be trying to capitalize on what could be a crack in the 10 shield.

In 2006 radio also had subtle changes. Two more all music stations blessed our airwaves and more small local stations gave upthe ghost. Jack (the offering at South Central) and Earl (Citadel Broadcasting) tried to be your I Pod stations. The big problem is the two stations are nothing more than last gasp tries at luring a lost audience. You kids with your MP3 players already have your Jacks and Earls and they are customized for your taste by YOU. Brothers and sisters there is a whole new world out there of media lovers who have left radio faster than we all turned to FM when James A. Dick past out those free converters in the parking lot on Kingston Pike a few decades back. 2006 was the year local radio really stopped being local, Jack and Earl are about as local as a lost family of Yankees trying to find Dolly Wood. Back in 2005 only TWO PERCENT of the cars in the Knoxville radio market had satellite radio. Also less than half of the GM cars offered the new pay radio, but this year GM has over 150 different models with satellite radio and one of the hottest sellers in the world of electronics this holiday season was XM radio. Why hear 4 in a row locally when you can hear unlimited in a row on satellite, with few if any commercial breaks? Local radio will never out music satellite, just a fact Jack. Someday you will tell your children, not grandchildren but your children, that one time there was free radio, it had people talking on it you saw in Kroger and everyone actually got excited and drove across town to get a T Shirt with the name of the station on the front. Granted they will give you that deer in the headlights look and then continue with their downloading, but most of you will feel a twinge of sadness in knowing they will miss out hearing their local team play ball on the air on a Friday night or just having their name mentioned after they called in a request.

So is 2007 going to just suck or will it be better? As far as media goes, all I am sure is 2006 was a new beginning and this time next year all of us will be shocked at the advances or in some cases the regressions we will have seen. Stay Tuned!

THE VERY LAST WEEK TO BUY ME SOMETHING!

The staff has taken the entire week off to shop and decorate so we will use the space for some holiday thoughts. As for the standard Christmas shows, NBC did their one night only showing of It’s a Wonderful Life and the best I could do was hang in until the drug store dude boxed the kid's ears. Sunday night Christmas Vacation was on TBS twice and The Christmas Story will run a full 24 hours starting Christmas Eve on several cable channels.

Beth Green is inviting everyone to an 11 p.m. Christmas Eve service at their church in Alcoa. "First United Methodist Church of Alcoa (617 Gilbert St. Alcoa) will feature Acoustic guitars, mandolin, and maybe a fiddle! You'll enjoy it. And the preacher won't go on and on that night. He's pretty good, too! (I married him.)"

Beth

I invited myself into the deal and they are going to let me do a tune as well as play with the real musicians in attendance. If you know where the old Alcoa swimming pool is you can find the church and as Beth said everyone is invited.

I got this note from someone who obviously moved from the frozen north and after reading what those tired folks have to put up with in the winter I can see why they MOVED SOUTH!

Diary of a Snow Shoveler, Author unknown

December 8: 6:00 PM.
It started to snow. The first snow of the season and the
wife and I took our cocktails and sat for hours by the
window watching the huge soft flakes drift down from heaven.
It looked like a Grandma Moses Print. So romantic we felt
like newlyweds again. I love snow!

December 9:
We woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow
covering every inch of the landscape. What a fantastic
sight! Can there be a more lovely place in the Whole World?
Moving here was the best idea I've ever had. Shoveled for
the first time in years and felt like a boy again. I did
both our driveway and the sidewalks. This afternoon the
snowplow came along and covered up the sidewalks and closed
in the driveway, so I got to shovel again. What a perfect
life.

December 12:
The sun has melted all our lovely snow. Such a
disappointment. My neighbor tells me not to worry; we'll
definitely have a white Christmas. No snow on Christmas
would be awful! Bob says we'll have so much snow by the end
of winter, that I'll never want to see snow again. I don't
think that's possible. Bob is such a nice man I'm glad he's
our neighbor.

December 14:
Snow lovely snow! 8" last night. The temperature dropped to
-20. The cold makes everything sparkle so. The wind took my
breath away, but I warmed up by shoveling the driveway and
sidewalks. This is the life! The snowplow came back this
afternoon and buried everything again. I didn't realize I
would have to do quite this much shoveling, but I'll
certainly get back in shape this way. I wish I wouldn't huff
and puff so.

December 15:
20 inches forecast. Sold my van and bought a 4x4 Blazer.
Bought snow tires for the wife's car and 2 extra shovels.
Stocked the freezer. The wife wants a wood stove in case the
electricity goes out. I think that's silly. We aren't in
Alaska, after all.

December 16:
Ice storm this morning. Fell on my ass on the ice in the
driveway putting down salt. Hurt like hell. The wife laughed
for an hour, which I think was very cruel.

December 17:
Still way below freezing. Roads are too icy to go anywhere.
Electricity was off for 5 hours. I had to pile the blankets
on to stay warm. Nothing to do but stare at the wife and try
not to irritate her. Guess I should've bought a wood stove,
but won't admit it to her. God I hate it when she's right. I
can't believe I'm freezing to death in my own living room.

December 20:
Electricity's back on, but had another 14" of the damn stuff
last night. More shoveling. Took all day. %^#$^ snowplow
came by twice. Tried to find a neighbor kid to shovel, but
they said they're too busy playing hockey. I think they're
lying. Called the only hardware store around to see about
buying a snow blower and they're out. Might have another
shipment in March. I think they're lying. Bob says I have to
shovel or the city will have it done and bill me. I think
he's lying.

December 22:
Bob was right about a white Christmas because 13 more inches
of the white shit fell today, and it's so cold it probably
won't melt till August. Took me 45 minutes to get all
dressed up to go out to shovel and then I had to piss. By
the time I got undressed, and dressed again. I was
too tired to shovel. Tried to hire Bob who has a plow on his
truck for the rest of the winter; but he says he's too busy.
I think the asshole is lying.

December 23:
Only 2" of snow today. And it warmed up to 0o. The wife
wanted me to decorate the front of the house this morning.
What is she nuts!!! Why didn't she tell me to do that a
month ago? She says she did but I think she's lying.

December 24:
6". Snow packed so hard by snowplow, l broke the shovel.
Thought I was having a heart attack. If I ever catch the
jerk who drives that snowplow, I'll drag him through the
snow by his thumbs. I know he hides around the corner and
waits for me to finish shoveling and then he comes down the
street at 100 miles an hour and throws snow all over where
I've just been! Tonight the wife wanted me to sing Christmas
Carols with her and open our presents, but I was busy
watching for the snowplow.

December 25:
Merry Christmas. 20 more inches of the slop tonight.
Snowed in. The idea of shoveling makes my blood boil. I
hate the snow! Then the snowplow driver came by asking for a
donation and I hit him over the head with my shovel. The
wife says I have a bad attitude. I think she's an idiot. If
I have to watch "It's a Wonderful Life" one more time, I'm
going to kill her.

December 26:
Still snowed in. Why did I ever move here? It was
all HER idea. She's really getting on my nerves.

December 27:
Temperature dropped to -30o and the pipes froze.

December 28:
Warmed up to above -50. Still snowed in.
December 29:
10 more inches. Bob says I have to shovel the roof or it
could cave in. That's the silliest thing I ever heard. How
dumb does he think I am?

December 30:
Roof caved in. The snow plow driver is suing me for a
million dollars. The wife went home to her mother. 9"
predicted.

December 31:
Set fire to what's left of the house. No more shoveling.

As they say on EZ 88.30 "Have your self a merry little Christmas!"

First do you recognize the teacher or any of the students in the above picture? Think WKGN, Fulton, The Duck, The Dr. and then let me know who you think it is! As always the winner gets nothing.

A few changes, thoughts, and surprises materialized in our local media camps last week. Years ago when I wrote for the "big" paper the former head man said the part of my column he liked the best was bullet points. Being a budding newspaper scribbler packing a mega radio ego I naturally assumed his reasoning was based on said bullets being short. Short is not good, short does not let the journalist inject his or her style, flavor, verve, and vast literary background into their masterpiece. Because the guy also hated stories that had a jump in them and was so terrified by snakes he would not even allow a picture of one from the zoo in his paper I naturally filed his bullet thought in the eccentric bucket and kept them to a minimum. All that said, here are a few bullets from last week.

1. Here is a thought (from someone both in the business and highly respected by me) on the mega slide to ratings hell by WATE…"Considering that the Fox News at 10:00 (produced by WATE) is one of the "late" newscasts -- the WATE 11:00 news is in FOURTH PLACE."

2. Another thought on WATE flew in over the cyber transom.
"Just in case you haven't heard, Ch 10 has a new anchor/reporter. She is Evette Martinez (SP?) She will be reporting three days a week and anchoring the weekend news. She used to be at ch 6 and left to pursue other interests in the business."
Two fast footnotes, first WBIR seldom hires anyone from across town, even if they sandwiched another job outside the business into their résumé before they joined the 10 team. Second, it was rumored by more than a few insiders at 6 that Martinez got a rather "raw" deal when she left 6. Again the key word is rumored so don't tag me with "creating" a fact on this one.

3. NEWSTALK Traffic/Talk Show Host is leaving. "I have been presented with an exciting opportunity for my career. However, to pursue this we need to move. I have accepted a position as the morning talk show host on KLIK-AM in Jefferson City, Missouri. The station is respected and its location in a state capitol could lead to bigger and better things down the road. I start at KLIK on January 2, 2007, and I will be heading out there between Christmas and New Year.
Jay Kersting

4. When Harold Ford Jr. was in town being congratulated by the libs and the dems for his fine run in November his Uncle was being sentenced to the slammer. Interesting that not one journalist attending the tainted (the guy lost) celebration party had the backbone to ask the man about his Uncle?

I checked a comment in the "guest book" at Southern Roots Radio asking why I had no information on a reportedly purloined web cam, allegedly missing from their control room. I was informed of the missing cam a few weeks back and because the few times I have had the opportunity to be on the station either it was not working or the viewing of it was tied to e mailers actually requesting the operator to turn it on, I assumed they just scrapped it? Turns out a controversy of biblical proportions has erupted over the thing and if you care to follow the history of the disappearance dash over to http://southernrootsradio.com and click first on the programming links (try political) and then on the guest book. If the big paper gets behind the story and one of the public service TV channels pile into the mix, this thing could grow legs and become of major importance, or not.

Dec 3, 2006

November TV ratings are in da can!

JUST NOTICED A GREAT COMMENT!!...If you get bored in all the number stuff at the closing of the blog PLEASE scroll down to the comment section. Several thoughts on why WATE is having another horrendous rating experience! As always, if you have a thought pop it in, it will not be jacked around with or deleted!

Here is the plan Stan.

Two stations have been sending great updates on the November ratings war and I am going to post their latest reports just as they were created.
If you have a problem with their thoughts email me or post right here on the blog...if you find wrong numbers and can prove they are wrong (or kinda think they look odd) then wear them out!

Also last week Bill Williams said good bye again. Man that just sucks. Like everyone else who watches local TV news I am a giant Bill fan. The first time he left we were already kinda used to Ted from Live At Five, but the station had enough gray matter to talk him into continuing on the air in other roles. Having the voice and face of Bill around is a good thing and later when Ted pulled the "Holiday Surprise" and scooted off to Atlanta Bill walked back in like he had never left. The numbers showed him to be as popular as before and BIR never missed a step.

Now that he is leaving again things are not as easy. This new fellow is reported by staff to be a very nice guy and a hard worker. Great, but will that be all that is needed to replace Bill Williams?? Yea I agree with you..Not by a long shot! I really wish the brains of the outfit had figured out a way to talk Bill into just staying right where he was a few more years. Nothing against the new dude, but unlike the first exit when Ted slid in so easily this one just has a ragged feel to it. Good luck to both 10 and Bill!

Here are the "as created" Nielson ratings thoughts from WVLT and WBIR.

Never saw a thing from good old WATE? Either they are in a snit or they don't have much to brag about this go round?

Enjoy

In olden times the University of Tennessee use to practically give away the broadcasts of their games to any station who wanted them. When WKGN went on the air in 1947 one of the driving forces behind the new station was UT football and bringing a kid named Lindsey Nelson over from WROL to do the broadcasts. Nelson had worked for General Neyland selling advertising in the printed baseball programs and also doing a little play by play. When the founders of WKGN approached him about moving to the new station the carrot of doing the games was all that was needed.

In the late 1960s WATE (AM 620 radio) carried both football and basketball games, while just about any station outside the Knoxville market was welcome to broadcast the games. WATE started calling themselves the flagship station of the Vols and it flew all over the kids running WIVK. When the games became big business and WATE moved from WETE to WRJZ, WIVK grabbed the games and the hallowed title of Flagship Station. Later when the broadcast privilege was auctioned off to the highest bidder JACOR (owner of WMYU) crunched the numbers and bid up to the point where the cost would still allow them to make money with the broadcast. WIVK bid higher and today they still own the games locally and the right to call themselves the FLAGSHIP Station.

After the fine performance of the Big Orange out in Bill Clinton Country most fans are gearing up for basketball! As the sports pundits told us Sunday morning on WBIR, the Vols sucked in every aspect of the game against the Hogs. What really shivers our timbers is the fact that Kentucky AND Vandy are not the door mats of old.
To slither into a Peach Bowl or, heaven help us all the Music City Joke Bowl, the Big Orange has to crawl by both of these kids.

At this point most are saying, lets remember our Georgia win (although Georgia stinks worse than a whistle pig three days dead on Kingston Pike) and move on over to the house of Pearl.

No matter how dejected we are we will still fire up WIVK come Saturday morning and listen as we negotiated the weekend chores right up until kick off. Da Vols are now an official brand of Da Frog and right now sales boys and girls are on the street spewing the old line of "NEXT YEAR" to the advertisers. Truth is next year things could turn around and if there is one thing we agree on it is UT is one of the biggest "NEXT YEAR" teams in the SEC!

This is how they started, can you name them and what they are doing today?

Media Report

November is another ratings time for TV, it is also the month radio starts to finish their fall ratings and it is a month for Thanksgiving Turkeys.

According to one e mailer all the turkeys are not necessarily surrounded by artery choking starches and gallon bottles of Wild Irish Rose. Before you read their note let me assure you this came from a living person and was not a figment created by someone indulging in a pre-Thanksgiving taste of brown whiskey. If anyone finds it offensive then they should post in the comment section and as always their unedited response will be added.

Now the rant:

"Just my opinion."

"I have a name for each station and their so-called
news people who seem to move faster than a marker does
in a game of Monopoly. Which leads me to say that my
7 year old grandson sends me better unassisted emails
than one could get from local TV newspeople."

"Anyway, back to The Land of the Nerds! That is my
descriptive phrase for Channel 10. That weather girl,
whatshername, Julia?, but not Roberts, dresses and has
a hairdo like my Grandmother had in the 1940s, and Julia
even dresses like Grandmother did back then."

"And the noonday guys are definitely not dumpster
divers. They are so polished dressed in their suits, sit
in 2 chairs set at a 45 degree angle. Ben and Mike?
They look like the two guys who sit in similar chairs
just inside Smith Mortuary. The guys that tell you
where to go, I mean, which chapel you should proceed
to. Ben & Mike will probably advance to a career as
mortuary greeters."

"Anyway, that is my rant about Land of the Nerds. More
to follow in future days."

Again, a VIEWER'S thoughts not mine, also if your station was not mentioned feel free to post or come on back and see when this viewer send in another thought or ten.

Local TV news is fun to watch and the gaps in everything from reporting to dress are widening between the various stations. What do YOU think is the cause? Talk among yourselves and post below!

More than a few local radio stations will be swimming in a dry river bed when the flow of political ads dries up after Tuesday. If you are going to buy time from any of them be sure to remember they are coming off one of the most lucrative elections in years and even though the holiday advertising is a nice tree to shake they can all see the dark ugly January days right over the hill. Remind them of it and bargain for a better rate! It really can be fun if you get the right gal or guy and all of them (OK with the exception of WIVK cause they stay sold out) have the latitude to extend your buying power. Good luck and have FUN!

I am going to really get back into the old days of TV and radio starting next Sunday. More than a few great pictures from the past have been coming into the media bunker (send yours to wjonair1@aol.com) and I will be posting them for you to see. We also will look back at the radio graveyard and see if anyone remembers the victims or better yet their crimes. As for TV, I still think WBIR.com kicks donkey with their look back at their 50 years of broadcasting. If you keep missing their fine packages, just dash over to their site and check them out.

The November TV sweeps have just started and it really does look like WVLT is moving past WATE and taking aim at WBIR. If you like to read numbers and charts then here is what the first few days of the TV ratings looked like.
