BOO

Happy HOWL O WEEEEEEEENER!

IT IS HERE!! TIME TO BE SCARED!

WANTA GO GHOST HUNTING?

In KNOXVILLE here be

a few PLACES to check OUT!

Any places listed in the Haunted Places requires permission to visit or investigate. Many of the places are patrolled by the authorities, trespassers will be prosecuted.

Knoxville - Baker Peters Jazz Club - Baker Peters Jazz Club is a known haunted site in Knoxville. Now a trendy & expensive Jazz bar, it was once a Civil War era residence. The baseline of the story goes that the house was built by a Dr. James Harvey Baker. Dr. Baker's allegiances in the war are disputed; some have him on the side of the Confederates, others have him as neutral. Either way, he did have at least one son that we know of named Abner who fought staunchly for the Confederates (other versions have Dr. Baker with TWO sons on opposing sides of the war). During an invasion by the Union army in 1864, Dr. Baker was treating wounded Confederates in his home when the Union army arrived and demanded the surrender of the men in the house. Dr. Baker refused and barricaded himself and in his bedroom. The Yankees invaded the house, raced upstairs and shot him through the door. Upon returning home, 22 yr old Abner vowed revenge on the person who informed the Yankees that his father harbored Confederates. He did kill the informer, a postmaster, but was later killed by the informer's friends in a return act of revenge. Legend has it that Abner has refused to leave the house that he and his family fought so hard to retain. The house went through several changes of hands before becoming a jazz bar, which was likely very disrupting to whatever spirits are there. Baker Peters claims to have a framed photo of what looks like Abner's ghostly reflection posted somewhere in the restaurant. Other accounts report employees experiencing chills, hearing whispering, objects moving or being thrown from shelves and breaking, and even (in the early days) discovering a hanging candelabra in a dining room with the candle holders twisted downward.

Knoxville - Bijou Theater - Rumors has it that this theater located in the middle of the city is haunted by a man. The theater was once some kind of army hospital way back when. It gained publicity by local radio station...Voices and even sightings have been heard there.

Knoxville - Halls High School - It is said that in the late 1970's a young girl was having a fight with her boyfriend at the top of the stairs by the office when he pushed her and she fell to the bottom of the stairs. He left her to bleed to death. When the boyfriend got nervous, he went back to where he had left her and she wasn't there. No one knew where the girl had went and he told no one of what he had done. She was filed under "missing persons" and no one ever found her. One year later on the day of her murder, the boyfriend was on his way home from a party when he was stabbed and killed and left for dead. No weapon was ever recovered nor was anyone ever convicted. It is said that is was his high school girlfriend that came back from the dead to avenge her murder. Supposedly, many strange things happened in that stairwell that caused the school board to close it up. The doors are locked and it now leads to nowhere cause it has been built up at the top. There are many boxes of storage in there and no student is to be allowed in there at anytime. At night it has been reported that janitors can hear arguing, and sometimes you may even hear something falling down them.

Knoxville - HillCrest-North Nursing Home - Building "B" - was built in 1951,the oldest wing of the Nursing Home was originally used as a T.B. Hospital and years later turned into a Nursing Home. The building is of the Art-Deco style and has six floors and a basement. Many who have worked here, have seen ghosts. The ghosts have been of dead people who have worked there years ago, such as Nurses and Maintenance Men who still feel compassionate towards the building and residents. Hillcrest is known for it's caring staff. Living and Deceased.

Knoxville - Lakeshore Asylum - The original structure burned down in the 1920's, but the gutted ruins remain. People have reported hearing the screams of patients being beaten and shackles being thrown around.

Knoxville - Lennox Place - Lennox subdivision - Not many of the neighbors want to talk about it but some do. The whole Lennox subdivision has experienced ghosts. It is not a house but many houses that see the same ghosts. A man with white hair, in a long nightgown. A young girl with long blonde hair. They are mischievous mostly and not mean. They like to open people's garage doors in the middle of the night. Rattle dishes. Unlock doors during daytime when the owners are away so that they come home and their house is wide open.

Knoxville - Old Grey Cemetery - Supposedly haunted by a black shape. Mainly seen late at night moving through the tombstones.

Knoxville - University of Tennessee campus - Strong Hall - The Women's Residence Hall, Strong, is said to be haunted by the ghost of one of the first female students to attend the school. It is said that she appears in the lobby mirror every year on her birthday. Students have reported strange noises at night, and Sophie, the ghost, is said to take a dislike of sexual indiscretions.December 2003 Addition: "Sophie"... One of the most popular rumors is that the 4th floor Resident Asst's room is considered to be "Sophie's" room and that anyone assigned to that room is teasingly/affectionately nicknamed "Sophie's Roommate". Some have even gone so far as to say that no one RA has lasted more than a year in that room. While Sophie is generally depicted as a benevolent spirit who wants to ensure that the women of Strong uphold their moral decency, many younger students are afraid of her still.

My favorite “media” memories of Halloween were writing stories about what the local radio mob was doing to scare up some ratings. Two of my favorites were when the original Mark and Kim of Star spent the evening in the basement of
Baker Peters on that special night. Kim could tell you stories! The other was the time Mike Hammond and the WIVK kids spent Halloween night ghost hunting in the Bijou.

Real media haunts include the old WIVK building on Kingston Pike (Old timers can tell you some “basement” stories that will curl your hair)..and the mansion on Broadway where WATE has their studios and offices. That joint’s owner was stone cold dead for five days in the manse before anyone found him and folks have said they can still smell him cooking breakfast upstairs!

The current SCARY story in radio has to be the reports that the morning guy on WWST flew into a rant about his competition on the FROG and reportedly said they (the WIVK morning show) were doing 80s radio? Bless his heart if that means they are doing news, bits, taking calls on the air, giving stuff away and playing the hits then he might wanta give it a try! From the numbers it sure looks like more than a few listeners “prefer” 80s radio over long protracted rants he allegedly engages in!

WIVK-FM Citadel Country 25.2 23.5 20.6 21.1 19.6

WWST-FM Journal CHR/Top 40 7.1 8.1 7.7 7.1 7.2

As always your comments are welcome and remember if you are going to roll a yard or soap a window please go with biodegradable products! Al Gore would so appreciate it!

Here are the latest comments…ADD YOURS NOW

Anyone hear the rant from Marc on STAR about how bad the WIVK morning show was?

He was out of the box in insults and even Kim was still!

Who is this guy and why would he go off on a show that has 2.9X the listeners as his?

Radio is dead because it has no
idea how to get people to listen!

Music is so not the answer because MUSIC is found around every
corner!

How about some FUN?
Could work?

Yeah...heard that rant about ivk the other morning..he always does that...why in the world would you even bring up that station...but he is always bashing them...would be different if their show was kicking their ass...but thats not the case...Kim and Frank were kinda speechless...letting the dude rant...but of course, he always seems to think he's better and smarter than everyone else anyway,so there ya go..

guess he figures if he gives them down the road,it might make a few more listeners turn their way...but that station is always smashed by ivk....they should say were Number 1 ...right after the toad station...they would be correct it most all books...wonder if he knows how much of a cry baby that makes him sound...feel sorry for the other 2 having to hear that crap all the time...

Kim and Frank are class acts, but that Mark Anthony dude is a bald, jealous, big piece of crap who would likely not do well in a market bigger than Knoxville. Maybe he is jealous because WIVK, a station double the size of his, would NEVER hire him. Whoopdie-do, you work at Star 102.1, who gives a crap!

That station is not established and has sucked since the end of the old U-102 days. Mark is NOT a reflection of the local market and should leave. At least Kim has been in Knoxville radio for years and Frank is polite enough to adapt; heck Frank has worked at all three of the big radio groups in Knoxville over the past five years, and has still seen fit to stay.

I think it's funny how WIVK now has a part time jock named Mark Anthony as well!

Is the guy on the pop station Marc or Mark? Was there a Mark before this Mark?

I do remember Frank when he was on with Phil at WIMZ and we really enjoyed hearing him when we drove the kids to school, he was really funny and added class to the show.

Why don't they use him more? I agree that Mark or Marc adds very little to the show and most mornings sounds like he has a chip on his shoulder!

KIDS

remember last week when the MEGA paper ran those
radio ratings? LOL
here be the REAL ONES!

No let me talk to you like
a brother IN law!

I think WIVK is trying to
get folks who pay THAT DAMN MUCH
for a SPOT... to think like it is 1999!
No really...the world of local radio is
shrinking faster than a T shirt bought
at Wally World! I so believe they
(WIVK) are twisting and turning
in the ratings wind right now
cause the playing field has been
so BLOWN up! That said,
you do what you want and you believe what you
want but the next time the big paper runs
RATINGS..Please hang around for this tired ass
blog and let us link YOU to the truth!

I just got this:

Keep Michael Grider of WNOX and his brother in your thoughts and prayers. Jonathan Grider was stabbed in Oak Ridge...including having his throat slashed...and is now at UT Med Ctr.

Michael has had to go from reporter to now being a spokesman for the family. I can only imagine the stress he is experiencing.

Jay Kersting,

Good WEDNESDAY morning!

The HISTORIC KNOXVILLE RADIO site
has a really cool old poster of the line up from the long dead WETE!
The station was the AM radio side of WATE
television and evolved into WRJZ in 1976.
The CEO of the blog managed to get a job
doing afternoons there after a guy
let it slip that there was an opening
and said “guy” was going to apply.
Both the Boss and this guy were
working at WKGN and not knowing that
the Boss was a veteran of many
radio back stabbings
he shared the super secret
info of an opening at WETE with him.
Quickly the Boss exited the control room
found a phone and called the WETE Program Director.
Being familiar with his
snappy wit, fine deep voice, the Boss's $110.00 a week salary
Don Patrick (WETE PD) hired the Boss
on the phone for a knee rattling salary of $145.00 a WEEK!

Moving from WKGN to WETE
was like going from the penthouse to the outhouse.
The Famous 1340 was
slick, played hit tunes, and was a jumping off
place for announcers to move to bigger markets.
WETE was an eclectic group
of really great announcers
coupled with a sales/management staff that made Herb Tarlek look like a genius.
All in all WETE was great fun
and as is said so often in radio
the inmates truly did run the institution!

NEW...the L I N K S are now in white. The staff said it was much
easier to find them with the new color format.

For some odd reason the BIG PAPER ran a look
at the radio ratings over the weekend.
Friends if you want to see CURRENT ratings
and find out just where all the dawgs are
running in the race just click right
HERE!
Yep, the numbers the BIG PAPER
ran were correct but again if you want
CURRENT numbers..as in what is going
on RIGHT NOW in local radio tap
that new WHITE link!

IMUS is back according to Drudge
be sure to check their site today
for more details.
Right now they
are saying he will be starting December
3rd.

I just hope he returns spitting nails and
fire at those who slithered around in the
dark to get him canned. I also hope he remembers
his last day on the air and how H. FORD Jr.
ran under the rug on him! GO DON..WELCOME
BACK!

AL GORE WINS THE BIGGGUN!

Vote early and often on
the question about Al Gore
winning a prize for
PEACE by boring us with
a movie on his thoughts
on the environment!

As we all have been told
by Al he is very big on
going GREEN and because
we believe in equal time
we found a great inside
link outlining some of his
biggest ideas on
how to give MOTHER EARTH A BIG WET KISS.
Please check it out
before you vote!

Also before you vote
on Al Gore's big win you
might want to take a look at
what SCIENTISTS are saying about
global warming and Albert's
point of view!

More to come as it happens...be sure to check
Drudge for the newest details on the long
awaited return of DON IMUS!

And as always after
you vote feel free to
drop in your comments!

FLASH!!!!!!BREAKING WIND...BREAKING NEWS...
BREAKING WIND!

NBC Universal is dropping the curtain on "beautiful downtown Burbank."

THEY ARE COMING OUT OF THE
WOODWORK TO KEEP DON FROM WORKING?
WHO ARE THESE "GROUPS" WHO
WANT TO TAKE AWAY A MAN'S RIGHT
TO WORK IN THIS COUNTRY?

Don Imus wants back on the radio
and so do the millions who miss
the man.

This afternoon an
obscure group called the
The National Association of
Black Journalists...
show of
hands of ANYONE WHO KNOWS ANYONE
IN THIS GROUP?? Yea me either..anyway
THEY are trying to STOP this
man from earning a living in
the United States Of America!

I hope those suits trying to
hire DON give these NAOBJ folks
a GIANT MIDDLE FINGER!

Dang it Don fight these guys
and get back on the air!

Commissioner Scott Moore
calls meeting to discuss
possibility of special election!

OH YEA YOU KIDS IN KVLE
REALLY DO NEED TO ELECT
MORE OF THE SAME AND FAST!

GREAT WIN!!!!

SPORTS RADIO CALLERS ARE
IN A QUANDARY..GAY STREET QUARTER BACKS
CAN'T FIGURE OUT HOW TO
CONTINUE THEIR HATE FOR
PHIL!

Restful weekend after the fine
win. It is easy to hate Florida
but Georgia is another matter. Their
school is located in a really
good little burg and I have never
visited their campus on game
day in orange without having
a very cute GA sorority
girl give me a quality cussing!
A drunk blond gal stumbling out of
antebellum home with fire in her
eyes is as southern as a visit
to The Varsity!

Enjoyed some fellowship with
a retired Sentinel (local paper in
Knoxville, TN)writer this weekend and
he ask what I thought of the trial
outcome.

Humbled that he would
ask I tried to form my thoughts
for a succinct and clear answer.
The best I could come up with was,
"I loved it!" I added that the
paper was the ONLY media outlet
with the resources and the hanger
downs to take on the folks what run
local government. I also said
the fun part now was to see how
the shadow players are coming out
to both endorse the ruling and
try to take credit for it!
Knoxville is just great fun to
watch from a safe distance. The
big question now is when will the
SIXTY MINUTES crew be landing at
TYS?

Have you tried this
blog yet?

What makes it a beautiful thing
is the gate keeper has
opened the door to all
former radio kids and their
cloudy memories of the way
it was. Take it from one
who ran with that pack, there
is NOTHING they love more
than to talk about..themselves!
If you are
local be SURE to drop in
and slide back to the days
when the radio was actually
something you wanted to
listen to!

As always vote early and
often in our poll...post
about anything and check back
for cracking news!!!!!!

WHAT A WONDERFUL WEEK WE JUST HAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FOUR of the stories that made us go,
DANG were:

1.. THE DAN FARKUS!!! Friends in all fairness I think this guy is
doing OK. Before you jump on him too hard check out his pedigree!

2.. THE RUSH LIMBAUGH! Lord help I had
NO idea when the "STAFF" said in the
afternoon meeting we needed
to talk about RUSH LIMBAUGH the
pure HATE and rage it would generate!
I was so AGAINST talking about the guy!
Heck everyone knows just the mention
of the man's name makes the far
far left grow fangs and pool
massive amounts of spittle!
I was told my vote didn't count
because I was crippled by age. We
ran the story and boy did the rats
come out of their HOLES!!!!!
You commented and commented and
KEPT COMMENTING! As always
here is RUSH'S SIDE.

3..THE DON IMUS! Kids how
cool or NOT COOL would it be
to have this wonderful old curmudgeon
on the air right here in KNOXPATCH!
You naturally had thoughts on the
return of the Don and they were
as always WONDERFUL!

4..WATE FIRED BY FOX!
Brothers and sisters we
SAID it was just a rumor but
certain posters took it
to heart and embraced it
as FACT! Staff wants you
to know the story is still
in the rumor box until
the WATE MOLE says
the deal is done!

As aways..YOU the POSTER
made the blog a heck of a read last week!

THANK YOU and if you would like to continue to
post this weekend...fire at WILL!

The great POSTS from last week!!!!

The Fark IS irritating. I don't want a nice guy who reads the sports like he is talking to pre-schoolers. Maybe the above poster has a crush (even a mancrush) on him.

And I like that Fat Fool on Channel 8 at noon. He keeps people tuned in for the whole half hour and not bailing after the weather. The other two stations noon hours are very boring. And sucky.

No wonder Knoxville radio is so bad. There are so many stupid people running the statios it boggles the mind. They'll never learn, so they can kiss their assets goodbye.

I hate the damn Democrats. They will really screw up the country if they get totally in charge.

The left is so desperate that they will latch onto two words uttered by Rush Limbaugh, take them out of context, and then beat a dead horse over and over, all in an effort to take attention away from the moveon.org fiasco.

Almost every aspect of what the Democrats do is hateful and devious. They hate Bush and the right so much they will do anything to get power. But it WILL backfire on them. They learned from Bill Clinton a long time ago to lie and lie and lie and keep on lying, and to not shut up.

Those lying Democrats are wanting to legislate the Fairness Doctrine for talk radio and television. Because their Communistic ideas are not popular enough with real people to keep an audience. So they want to jam it down out throats. It won't work, and I pray that the Fairness Doctrine never becomes law. Because it is not fair. It reeks of Stalinism.

Some idiots post on this blog criticizing the Right, Republicans, Bush and Rush. As always, no new ideas, just blame and hate. Got news for ya--the folks on Fox are keeping the leftist networks from dealing propaganda to the masses. Someone to call the networks on their lies. Fox is not going away, and is becoming more popular than ever.

I firmly believe that if this country ever falls, it will be from within, and likely because Democrats and the Left failed the country. They'll let terrorism grow, let the damn Mexicans take over because they don't have the stones to patrol the border correctly, let China and Russia drive us into the ground economically, and weaken our military because they don't like them. To hell with them all.

I hate the damn left. And if you don't agree with me, you can kiss my ass.

Wednesday, October 3, 2007 12:52:00 PM EST"

I agree and here are the reasons.
I work for WATE and just because we are dropping FOX at ten is no reason to say they are mad and dropping us. We have a great news product at 11 and because we often rank higher than WBIR at that time we are tired of doing stories at 10 that they try to run out and cover before 11.

Also the link to Rush was a black eye to anyone who posts on Gene's blog at WATE of knoxviews.com
Both are great blogs and certainly do NOT need the hate speak that comes from this blog.

Unlike the author of this blog I have and still do work in media. It is so obvious this person has never been where I have been and is nothing more than a viewer. Until they have put in a few YEARS working for a real radio or television station they should stop trying to lie to professionals!

I am a professional broadcaster with over 30 years experience. There is a lot of lying on this blog, but it seems to come mostly from liberals.
If these tv and radio stations are operated so well, why are there so many problems with them? It's fun to sit back and read the tit for tat volleys fired here. One thing is constant from generation to generation. There's always an abundance of stupid people.

Spoken like a true fascist. Although I will say that Imus took himself off the air. Had he not made that verbal slip, he would still be on the air and YOU wouldn't have made a difference at all. The comment about Rush? I suppose a Democratic-led Congress and a Democratic president could begin to take our freedoms away. One more reason for the Right to keep the fascists out of power.

The next morning,

When his wife woke

Confused, the wife put on her robe,

Reasons were varied but one
was they didn't care for
WATE trying to get THEIR

OK, we didn't put much STOCK

hard...I will just steal one and jack with it!
How about rather than "WHERE HAVE ALL THE FLOWERS GONE"
we change it to "WHERE HAVE ALL THE RADIO LISTENERS GONE"

This second trend of the summer shows the trap
door falling open at WIVK and the FROG
wide-eyed as it looks into the abyss!
The highest rated country station in
all the kingdom is now in the teens
12+! Oh yea kids, and even with all the
hate talk about UT football their
sports talk station is seeing cracks in their
line! As for their NEW "oldies"
attempt on the old WOKI..well don't ask!

It isn't JUST the WIVK Juggernaut that
is bleeding....check out the numbers all
the way down the list and you will see
LISTENERS are taking a powder! Account
Weasels will tell you it is just a
"summer" thing but don't drink their
Kool Aid. It is a combo of children downloading
and creating their OWN music radio stations
on those T tiny little things at the end of
the strings coming out of their ears..
A N D the growth of OUTER SPACE RADIO!

Here is where the black dog of the
government comes into play. First
never forget the FCC is not there to
help YOU ..its only function is
to CONTROL one of the freedoms our kin
fought the British for a few centuries back.

That said as satellite radio grows the
FCC shrinks and man if there is one thing in
this world a government agency hates is to
shrink! Ya think they will just shut down and
let us control what we hear by NATURAL SELECTION?
Not a chance brothers and sisters and the
proof slammed me between the eyes
when I read..

" FCC Chairman Kevin Martin
said this morning that his agency
is considering forfeitures against
XM Satellite Radio and Sirius Satellite
Radio for a series of rule violations
tied to receiver standards and power
levels for terrestrial repeaters."

YEP they are reaching their claws
into something that is growing daily in
popularity and gives the listener an
abundance of choice as to what
bounces out of their car and home speakers!
Remember IF terrestrial radio keeps
exploding it will wither the tree the
FCC loves to prune and cultivate.

Katie's news on CBS sucks
like a super charged HOOVER
and she knows it! The upside
is she continues to dig
her own grave with her far left
mouth and at the same
time she is squaring off against
none other than Dan Rather!

If those two come to blows
we ALL WIN no matter who remains
standing!

The Washington Post says
that congress is actually
buying into Al Gore's
carbon footprint horror
story!
One member wants
to charge you another .50
for a gallon of gas and
keep you from building
your dream home, because
of Al! Scary kids very scary!

Locally the steam is
draining from the story
about the big paper lawing
Knox County Government
King and Queen Pins.
Watching the fine coverage
on our local TV news
outlets leaves our staff
saying both sides kinda
smell like the back
side of the compost heap.
As with all stories
your comments are so welcome
so jump on in!

Don't forget to vote early
and often in the poll!

WEDNESDAY ALREADY!

As you can tell one of my
favorite spots on the
web for news is Drudge.
Looks like they caught
some flack this morning and
more than a few folks have
stood with them in their
fight to bring you news
with a smile! If
you like to read the thoughts
of the FAR FAR left and
comment on them here is
the place to do it!

STAFF RETURNS FROM THE FLORIDA GAME!

When asked why it took them SO LONG
to drive home they said along the way
they kept seeing these signs that said
FREE PICNIC TABLES ONE MILE. According
to the guys the tables were made out
of concrete and it took hours to
break the seats away from them
so they could pack it all on the
roof of the Ford.

For some odd reason a local sports blog
has been dead into Kenny Chesney and it all
has to do with the Florida Game!

Best question after the game
came from one of the
kids on the Sports Animal
when they wondered out
loud how a team (UT) could play
a soon to be National Champion (FL)
to within ONE POINT and then
one year later let that team beat them
by over 30? Your thoughts are
so welcome on this one!

A former piano player
in one of New Yorks first gay
bathhouses is afraid to go on The View!

This morning the TODAY SHOW said a
student assaulted by police for
asking former Presidential Candidate
John Kerry questions
in an open
forum may have just been trying to
get attention. Not only did the
kid get attention he also got
fifty thousand VOLTS. QUESTION if
the same student had been assaulted
while asking a REPUBLICAN politician
questions would the TODAY SHOW have
taken the same stance?

SORRY WE ARE LATE!

Early Saturday morning right after catching the late show at
the Mary Knox on Old Maryville Highway the staff piled in their
SUVs and headed south to Florida for the UT game. Working with
a skeleton crew we just now managed to toss something together!

Print is media right? Then I have to ask do any of you
actually care about the lawing of the county government by the
big paper?
We have a poll up and if you wanta vote AND post
fire at will!

Question...are you now using WVLT for
your University of Tennessee football
station?
This is their first
year out as the "OFFICIAL"
flagship station of the Vols and
we (the few of us NOT in Florida)
were wondering if you have moved over
to them from WBIR to catch the Large
Orange?

Rumor floated in that
Abby Honey Baked had left the
building at 10. Relax, it
was just a floater and had
zero stickability. I like
the lady on the air, but some of
you have mixed feelings? If she
did leave would you jump ship
and watch WATE OR WVLT in the morning?
I know ANOTHER QUESTION! Whata think?

Last week Katie continued to
ride the down elevator in the
ratings war at CBS.
Her trip
to the sandbox pulled no new numbers
and when the story broke about
Hillary Clinton taking over 800K
in funny money for her campaign
Katie spent more time talking about
the death of a bird than the
sleazy contribution. Ya think
the "Rather" network will
bounce her over to 60 Minutes or
will they hang with her like they
did Dan cause they LOVE her agenda?
Again, hit the comment box..inquiring
minds wanta know!

This is Florida Week and from the
show of car flags and "special reports" on
radio and TV it looks like folks
could give a rodents behind. Is it
the Calf mess or the first half scare from
that trade school in Mississippi that has us
so down about da Orange? Will a WIN
Saturday cure the problem..or if we take it
in the shorts will there be Three Men and a
Truck at Phil's house Sunday Morning?

OK that is about all we can do
considering the media complex looks like
the aftermath of a raid at Hazel Davidson's
house

Have a great weekend...go VOLS
and be sure to comment and VOTE!

GOOD VOL WEEKEND!

WBIR.com has a place
where the unwashed can talk
about all sorts of pressing
and not so pressing thoughts.

A post on there today
wanted to know WHERE the COPS
were directing traffic
after BOOMSDAY?

Naturally we answered it
saying:

I'd like to know where traffic control was after Boomsday was over? "

THEY were practicing for the first UT home
game...they have hiding down to an art
form when it comes to mobs over 20K!

Kaboomsday looked outstanding on da TV! AT
LAST after 3 years of stumbling around they learned what a few of us old time radio kids found out in the early 90s....Folks come for the FIREWORKS and thats about it!

Hey we had NAME bands back then .. all of it free .. and we still pulled well over 300K so we dropped the bands ... went with local pickers and yep still had over 300K show. Before JACOR the founding company of Boomsday sold out to Journal
the mob had grown to a shade under 400K and the bands and pre-game show was cut way back.

Three years ago the newbies tried to bring back
a show across the road (old worlds fair park) and naturally it tanked...could have told them it would cause we had tried in a decade or so earlier.

Last night...it with the exception of some out of step elderly women trying to tap dance..the TV show was all firecrackers! Again...the old stuff was even better and the "magnitude" of the explosions were the best yet!

UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE GAMES REBROADCAST ON MYVLT2

WVLT VOLUNTEER TV and the VOL NETWORK have announced the rebroadcast of all University of Tennessee football games Sunday nights on MyVLT2.

WVLT and MyVLT2, recently named as the official flagship for the Vol Network, are expanding on their commitment to providing the Big Orange fans of East Tennessee the most comprehensive local sports in the region.

Sunday nights at 7:00 p.m. MyVLT2 and the Vol Network will rebroadcast the previous day’s game. The two hour viewer friendly broadcast, produced by the Vol Network, will feature complete game coverage with Bob Kesling, Tim Priest, Rick Russo and Mike Stowell.

In addition to great, Vol-friendly commentary from the Voice of the Vols, MyVLT2 viewers will be treated all the behind the scenes action, like the team meeting before the big games that only the Vol Network can provide.

When the action ends on the field, viewers get to hear from the Top Vol himself. MyVLT2 will air an encore presentation of THE PHILLIP FULMER SHOW Sunday nights at 9:00 p.m. after the game.

Then MyVLT2 turns it over to the fans as WVLT VOLUNTEER TV’s Mark Packer hosts THE LOCKERROOM at 10:00 p.m. offering armchair quarterbacks the opportunity to discuss Vol football in the hour-long call in show.

MyVLT2 can be found on Comcast channel 8, Charter channel 11, Communicomm channel 14, Knology channel 8, Haywood channel 6, Adelphia channel 73, Cumberland County channel 12, Morristown channel 9, Harlan County channel 3, Access channel 10, Evarts channel 41, Tri-Star channel 10, DirecTV channel 30, and Channel 8.2 on over the air digital TV.

Ten years ago Chuck's X
died in France. Since
the wreck more than a few have felt
everyone from the Queen to Bigfoot
was behind her death. Folks with no
life but a ton of time on their hands
have tried to pull the meat from the bone
and figure out who killed the woman.
If you are interested here is a
nice site that not only gives you
a look into how she died but also
finally clears ELVIS as the possible
killer!

The latest ARBITRON Numbers (radio station ratings)
are showing some fast growth coming out of Clinton/Halls!
The new country station is now in a tie for 8th in the market
12+ according to both Radio and Records
and Radio Info.

THINK ABOUT IT...a start up station
comes out of the box with some
really fun boards and nothing else and
KABANG they jump into the face of
the big GROUP OWNED stations!

Yep just about the time we all
had given radio up for dead locally
something like this happens and lord
help does it put a smile on our faces!

Had a question about KaBOOMS DAY
show up this AM and thought I would
share it here and in the comment section.

"Mr. Johnson:
Got a question about Boomsday.
The ads for the event call it the "20th Anniversary" or,
"The 20th Year for Boomsday".

If I'm not mistaken, the first Boomsday was in 1988.
That would put this year's event at indeed the 20th year, but not the 20th anniversary.
The official Boomsday site says "since 1987, Boomsday has been......")
If the event started in 1987, this would be the 20th anniversary but the 21st year.

I still think it started in 1988, not 1987.
But I figured since you were there, you would know.

Just wondering..."

LORD if I can remember??
CP will know he and I were at so many and yes we did
do the first one. I know
We got back together in 1987 on the old
U102. I also know the chain that owned us
(JACOR) put on these same shows on the same
day in at least Tampa and I think Nashville?

Anyway I can tell you that FIRST
Boomsday was flat scary for us.
Here we were BACK and hosting this
event and at 5:30 in the afternoon
the two of us were just about the only
ones there! We sat up on the corner of the
upstairs deck (It is all enclosed now)
at the Rib Joint on the river and
went on the air about 3. Brother we
lied like a cheap rug about how the
crowds were growing by the minute and
then Curtis said something about a boat
coming up river? Like ants headed to
an outdoor family reunion boats of all
kinds started chugging up to the bridge.
Cool part was on that first BOOMSday more thought
had gone into the fire crackers than
the safety of boaters. I think
some dude from the TWRA finally started
shepherding them out of the fire zone after a few
tied up right UNDER the bridge.

Long story longer that night over 100,000 showed
and when the paper reported it Bobby at IVK
went nuts! No matter what the crowd grew into
Bobby would always say there was NO WAY that many
people were down there! Oh and when word got back to
WIMZ that people were coming on that first evening
they raced down to the city county blding garage,
set up their van and started giving out
IMZ balloons. U102 folks took them and popped them
in their face and IMZ tucked tail and went back home!

SO in answer to your question...We were there in
87 and I think the plan for Boomsday was in
place before JACOR bought the place. In
other words, I can't remember! LOL

Remember when TV was NBC...ABC...and CBS?
For the first summer ever, ad-supported cable will have double the viewership of broadcast TV in prime time, with a 52.4 share, compared to 24.2 for the six major English-language broadcast networks.
SO the next time a TV salesperson turns up
their nose at you because you are
thinking of buying CABLE smile

has the biggest slice of the
prime pie NOW!

Do you REALLY take

Back window thermometer read

IT WAS SO HOT:

The birds have to use potholders to pull worms out of the ground.
The trees are whistling for the dogs.
The best parking place is determined by shade instead of distance.
Hot water now comes out of both taps.
You can make sun tea instantly.
You learn that a seat belt buckle makes a pretty good branding iron.
The temperature drops below 95 F (35 C) and you feel a little chilly.
You discover that in August it only takes 2 fingers to steer your car.
You discover that you can get sunburned through your car window.
You actually burn your hand opening the car door.
You break into a sweat the instant you step outside at 7:30 a.m.
Your biggest bicycle wreck fear is, "What if I get knocked out and end up lying on the pavement and cook to death?"
You realize that asphalt has a liquid state.
The potatoes cook underground, so all you have to do is pull one out and add butter.
The cows are giving evaporated milk.
Farmers are feeding their chickens crushed ice to keep them from laying boiled eggs

WOKI goes from EARL (whatever that was) TO OLDIES:

1.
The oldies station is boring. Same old songs over and over. XM plays lots of varieties of songs on individual channels for each decade from the 40s thru the 90s--and about 50-60 other channels, too. I've already dumped WOKI and gone back to XM--which is the future.

Anyone who subscribes to certain tiers of DirecTV gets XM for free as their music channels. Just as Dish gives customers Sirius channels. Narrow thinking and penny pinching are killing local radio.

2.
"Because of your Media Blog,
I started listening to WOKI over the weekend
and was excited because they played 60s, Motown, and Soul.
Now, I'm bored. They're now repeating and to hear a really good old song
is few and far between.
They're playing way too much "Archie's" and Neil Diamond.
I'm back listening to the Fulton High School oldies and 1040 a.m.

3.
satellite radio is of the devil!

My son loves old music and he found WOKI yesterday on the way home from school. I don't care what the other person said..we like it.

They play some funny old songs and
they don't have any commercials.

This week you guys were all into
the Don Imus vindication and then
the turn around litigation against him
by ONE of the Rutgers players.

1.
Great news about Imus! If WABC takes him back that will be a red hot poker right up the back side of both Al and Jessie.

It is wonderful when lawyers earn their money and the truth wins.

Go Don!

2.

Don Imus should give her ALL the money! He also should never EVER go back on the radio. This young woman's life is ruined by this crazy old WHITE man!

3.
Twenty million and a letter saying both sides
will shut up is not vendication for
this old white raciest. I hope
if he does get a job people like Harold
Ford will continue to shun him!

4.
I thought Imus made the remark about
the entire team? If so, how can only
one player say she was singled out?
Is her lawyer black?

5.
Imus called her a HO! For the rest of her life she will have to either live with it or try to get on at the Bunny Ranch!

Just another example of no money trying to get some from big money.

She and her case will be laughed out of court and Imus will be back on the air with over twenty million in his saddle bag.

PS
Go to HELL
Al and Jessie

BLOG WARS flat got everyone's
attention. When a local
REPUBLICAN
was banned from
knoxviews.com (a very FAR left blog)
more than a few of you had a thought
on the subject!

1.

Southern, white, conservative, evangelical Christian,
heterosexual, conservative husband and father said...

As for the blog story with Brian Hornback,
i've had dealings with Sandra Clark and Betty Bean, myself.
They are both more than one brick shy of a load.

2.

Dear S,W,C,E,C,H,C,H,Father..

I can tell you stories about both of those women but I won't.

They are group members in the
cirlce of the pissed off
and that is about all they will ever
be. Soon Scripts will fold
all of these little papers they bought
and later move their operation more on line.
If they can get fools to advertise
then they will have saved many
dollars while eliminating the competition.
Betty and Sandra will be just
old names a few left wingers will talk about
in the nursing home.

3.
I just counted three people posting
26 times on knoxviews about the banning!
They did mention two people
by name but NONE of those posting gave THEIR name.
If you are a republican you can't join the blog
that was obvious
from reading their thoughts.
A few of them were funny and sounded
like they might be like well normal?
I will see if I can sign up and post!

their thoughts and posts can

a record high thanks to your president
you might want to tone down
your comment section about knoxviews.com.
Jobs are not as easy to come by
as they were in the days when

hicks from Maryville like YOU!
Go AWAY

5.

Thank you for showing
me knoxviews.com! I have
already talked it over with
a few of my friends and we are
all going to sign up and post.
WE are FOX LOVING REPUBLICANS!
We also will keep posting until
they throw us off. It is a very
funny site and a little bit
scary also!

6.

I looked at knoxviews and there
is nothing on it that should attract readers.
What is the big deal about being banned
from a site like that? The posts I read were
all from one or two people and
they have no use for Republicans so again,
why even read it?

These didn't really fit any
topic.

1.
You poll is as stupid as you are.
Local radio is better now than ever,
more talent on the air and more reasons to listen.

Local TV is also doing good,
great looking people on 8
and fine reporting on 10 and 6.

I don't pay for the paper
but I sure do read it on my computer
so it is also doing great.

You are not doing so hot.

The Daily Times in Maryville and WIVK have kicked
everybody's ass on the story of Pat Summitt's
official divorce filing.

Wasn't on any TV news late Wednesday night,
and not on knoxnews.com Wednesday night either.
But it was on
the Daily Times website
by early evening,
and I heard it on
WIVK just after 9pm Wednesday.
I know this isn't the hardest of news,
but come on, for God's sakes,
are the TV stations sleeping!! It's Pat F*#king Summitt!!

5.

The Daily Time was wrong
to make such a fuss over a divorce.

Someone should write them a letter!

6.

Same old songs over and over.

Narrow thinking and penny pinching
are killing local radio.

Regarding local radio ratings, I've always believed it all depends on who gets the ratings books. That's why some stations, especially those below the top three or four, can have such huge changes from book to book.

I just saw a promo for Channel 10 noting
that "Ellen" will air at 2pm weekdays
starting in September.
Although she can sometimes be entertaining,
I don't think east Tennessee is ready
to embrace gay hosts. Which is why Rosie
will bomb after she gets her new show.
Whenever that is.
Maybe Ellen will do better going up against the soaps,
but will the viewers (are there any?)
of "Passions" on Channel 10 will be ticked.

HEY, CHANNEL 10, PLEASE STRAIGHTEN
OUT YOUR SCREWED UP STEREO AUDIO! IT SUCKS.

Honestly, when I heard that a Rutgers player was suing Imus,
I imagined what she looked like.
I was right, too.
Anyone who thinks these girls are ruined for life
is touched in the head,
as they say.
Without looking, can you name any of them?

Regardless of other posts,
local radio and tv do suck.
There is some talent on the air, but it's few and far between.
But mainly the formats suck.

And by the way,
have Al and Jessie ever worked
at a real job? Not the ones blackmailing businesses.

7.

WATE had Jim Wogan in their first news segment
at 11L00 with the news of
Pat Summitt's divorce filing.
I switched over after their weather
to watch Letterman and the guy on
WVLT had it in his sports segment.
Before the blogger shows his behind,
he really should learn where
the on button is on his TV set.
I subscribe to WIVK ealerts and
thought their promotion of more about
Pat's divorce would be on
Andy and Allison the next
morning was a little tacky.

8.
Well goll-damned at the feistiness!
Knox TV/Radio/paper could be a little better,
but so could your national network offerings.
Local outlets could be a heck of a lot worse!!
Have you seen surrounding markets and their crap
(not counting in Nashville and Atlanta).
Overall, I think our local guys and gals
are doing a dang good job! On the Magnavox,
10 is still strong, although not as hard
as the others on breaking news. 6 has slipped
just a little since its days in the 1990s and before.
8 is the best it has ever been, hands down.
Knox radio is still chugging along too,
although the options may seem
limited to some bitch-and-moaners whom
we will never be able to please.
The only big loss in radio is the
local feel of many of our AM stations.

I will not buy Sirius/XM
until they start providing
LOCAL content, traffic, news
, and INTERACTION with LOCAL
listeners. At least I can still get
local programming on my satellite television.

That's all I've got to say about that.
Remember, this is still jus
t KNOXVILLE, not NEW YORK. Chill people, chill.

ISN'T THIS FUN! Again, the poll is still open
so VOTE and if something in the media world happens we
will post it this weekend.

IT BE FRIDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FLASH..BREAKING NEWS

THIS IS A NOTE BEING SENT BY THE ACCOUNT WEASELS AT
WOKI THIS MORNING.

LOOKS LIKE WOKI (don't ask me where it is
now on the dial cause they move so much)
IS CHANGING FORMATS!

"Just wanted to be sure you heard it from us...

At 10 a.m. this morning, WOKI changed its format to "Oldies".

We're very excited about the change - it's a proven format in the Knoxville market &

will fit beautifully with the other formats Citadel in Knoxville has...

I would encourage you to listen today & this weekend, if you can!"

GUESS WHAT! WE THINK THE NEWS IS A JOKE! No really
there is a "POLL/STUDY" out and it
says..."US public sees news media as biased, inaccurate, uncaring.."

I THINK the second ANY news anchor (National nets and cable are the worst at this)
asks an EXPERT we should all throw things at the Zenith! KIDS, they hire these SHILLS to enhance their POINTS OF VIEW.
SO remember when you see "EXPERT" under
the face or hear the name used...THROW (pillows work great
never want to kill the Zenith cause that is
where UT FOOTBALL is when you can't
find a ticket!) and then hit the FLIPPER!

was great fun and I kept right on.

ALSO PLEASE leave a post or comment here also! Just moderated (bad word because I
let ALL posts on) one about someone mad at the lack of originality in the new
radio station coming to the area. Whata think? Just click comments and get in the game!

SORRY about the POLL
problem...not a clue what
is going on at blog headquarters
but they assure the staff a
solution will be found before
we all grow old!

You are in the middle of some kind of project around the house.

Mowing the lawn, putting a new fence in, painting the living room, or
whatever. You are hot and sweaty. Covered in dirt or paint. You have
your old work clothes on. You know the outfit, shorts with the hole in
crotch, old t-shirt with a stain from who knows what, and an old pair
of tennis shoes. Right in the middle of this great home improvement
project you realize you need to run to Wal-Mart to get something to
help complete the job. Depending on your age you might do the
following:

In your 20's: Stop what you are doing. Shave, take a shower, blow dry
your hair, brush your teeth, floss, and put on clean clothes. Check
yourself in the mirror and flex. Add a dab of your favorite cologne
because you never know, you just might meet some hot chick while
standing in the checkout lane. You went to school with the pretty girl
running the register.

In your 30's: Stop what you are doing, put on clean shorts and shirt.
Change shoes. You married the hot chick so no need for much else. Wash
your hands and comb your hair. Check yourself in the mirror. Still got
it. Add a shot of your favorite cologne to cover the smell. The cute
girl running the register is the kid sister to someone you went to
school with.

In your 40's: Stop what you are doing. Put a sweatshirt that is long
enough to cover the hole in the crotch of your shorts. Put on
different shoes and a hat. Wash your hands. Your bottle of Brute
Cologne is almost empty so you don't want to waste any of it on a trip
to Wal-Mart. Check yourself in the mirror and do more sucking in than
flexing. The spicy young thing running the register is your daughter's
age and you feel weird thinking she is spicy.

In your 50's: Stop what you are doing. Put a hat on, wipe the dirt off
your hands onto your shirt. Change shoes because you don't want to get
dirt in your new> sports car. Check yourself in the mirror and you
swear not to wear that shirt anymore because it makes you look fat.
The cutie running the register smiles when she sees you coming and you
think you still have it. Then you remember the hat you have on is from
your buddy's bait shop and it says, "I Got Worms."

In your 60's: Stop what you are doing. No need for a hat anymore. Hose
the dog crap off your shoes. The mirror was shattered when you were in
your 50's. You hope you have underwear on so nothing hangs out the
hole in your pants. The girl running the register may be cute but you
don't have your glasses on so you are not sure.

In your 70's: Stop what you are doing. Wait to go to Wal-Mart until
they have your prescriptions ready, too Don't' even notice the dog
crap on your shoes. The young thing at the register smiles at you
because you remind her of her grandfather.

In your 80's: Stop what you are doing. Start again. Then stop again.
Now you remember that you needed to go to Wal-Mart. Go to Wal-Mart and
wonder around trying to think what it is you are looking for. Fart out
loud and you think someone called out your name. The old lady that
greeted you at the front door went to school with you.

In your 90's: Stop what you are doing

Thanks to all who participated in the poll last week.
The burning question was...
WHAT WOULD CLEAN UP
KNOX COUNTY POLITICS?

Here are the results:

Burning pine knots, a rail and a bucket of tar

5 (20%)

Tanks in the streets

1 (4%)

Find Cas Walker's closest living kin and make them KING at sunset

1 (4%)

Call VISA and see if the county can get a better deal if they spend over a million a month

0 (0%)
Barn burnings

0 (0%)
Let Cock County run Knox County

6 (25%)

Bring in the mob

1 (4%)

Move to MARYVILLE

10 (41%)

The staff at the Walker Johnson Institute worked deep into
the evening and right on into the
shank of the morning to find
just what the voters were trying to
say.

In the shell of a nut the poll screams...
MOVE TO MARYVILLE!

Voters and this goes for the millions who read
the poll but were to shy to actually
participate...

Please DON'T DO THAT!
STAY WHERE YOU ARE!
WE LOVE TO HAVE YOU
VISIT AND SPEND BUT WE WOULD MUCH RATHER
YOU DIDN'T MOVE HERE!

WE NOW HAVE 4 RUSH HOURS!

YANKEES IN HELMETS ARE RIDING BIKES ON

SOCCER FIELDS ARE EATING UP

More than a few OUTSIDERS have

Fight where you are don't cut
and run over HERE!!!

The Staff

Just got a "comment" that
reminded me to tell the staff
we ARE a media reporting type
blog. It also included some good
info and a question.

Here it is:

"Walker, not forgetting that this is the Media Report blog, I encourage you to check out Victory 92-7 out of Harriman. The station was recently purchased by Knoxville minister Barry Culberson and his organization Progressive Media Inc.(WIFA-AM) for $2.4 million and changed the calls from WBZH-FM to WIJV-FM. Looks like someone finally wised up and got a commercial FM station to fight it out with the non-profit Love 89 for the religious bucks in town. They are also broadcasting on 107.3, so watch out Love 89! This station could be a real money-maker in a day when the other stations (not WIVK) are scrambling to turn a profit. Your thoughts, Walker? Should the other stations in town look to new formats instead of the same old tired schemes?"

Your thoughts, Walker? Should the other stations in town look to new formats instead of the same old tired schemes?"

Answer..
First it is great someone would drop that kind of money on ANY radio station
today! The industry is shaking in various ways and more than a few
who would have loved to have owned property are now backing down.

That said, if I were an owner I would be looking
at the big picture and trying to set MY STATION
above the pack. Face it MUSIC formats are coming under
fire from so many fronts now and their life blood
(YOUNG LISTENERS) are downloading like mad. When I got to
UT we had a kid on our floor who sold something illegal thus he had
piles of money. This kid bought some really big reel to reel units and
would dub LPs on to tape. The part we thought was beyond cool was
he had all these great songs back to back just like Hit Parade (the old WBIR FM
format) played. THEN he went next level and wired a little cassette recorder into his car, dubbed down from the big reels and with a little speaker hanging out of
his glove compartment...DROVE AROUND LISTENING TO ALL THESE TUNES! Lord help we
were not WORTHY!!!

Today kids do this with an MP3 and a docking station and laugh at you if you
ask if they are listening to the radio!

Winners in the game today are going to have to look out of the box...forget
the old ways and find something to bring folks back. Locally, the numbers (ratings) are falling across the board and with the exception of WIVK,
I would say every station in town would love to find a new path
to boost Ad dollars.

Answer to your question...after all that is
I would LOVE to see someone jump out with that NEW THING
that would bring folks back to what we grew up with. Kids
are SO missing the radio family and so are us AARP Members.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD FRIDAY MORNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PRAYERS PLEASE.
One of WBIR's most popular former anchor/reporters
is fighting cancer for the second time.

When I wrote for the real paper (no not the one in HALLS!)
I never did a story on this woman that didn't generate
letters and e mails complimenting her work and style on the air.
Please remember her in your prayers as she
again fights this insidious disease.

The July 2007 sweep is complete and WBIR-TV delivers 18 of the top 20 shows:

WBIR also delivered in the July 2007 sweep:

· Winning 9 of 9 weekday day parts (early morning, day, early fringe, early news 1, early news 2, prime access, prime, late news, & late fringe)

· Receiving 38% in market share of the primary 5 stations (nearest competitor had only 22%)

· WBIR/NBC’s over-all prime had a 34% advantage over its nearest competitor’s prime
